is jay's world real?

There are so many topics on this forum about The Odyssey coming to DVD that everyone has forgotten to discuss what's really important here...the series itself!

So, how do people interpret this series? Is Jay's subconscious world 'real', or is it really just a figment of his subconscious mind? To assume that it's real is to assume that this really is a fantasy series, and not just one big dream sequence...that when he went into a coma, he actually did 'enter' this world with its own preexisting rules and entities.

I think one piece of evidence against this theory is the existence of Flash and Alpha in the subconscious world. I feel like it would be unlikely for them to be there unless this was all a part of Jay's imagination.

However, it could be that every child is somehow represented in the subconscious world, and that Flash and Alpha 'found' Jay because of their connection to eachother in the waking world.

Discuss.

I always seen it as another plane of consciousness where children in a coma travel to. In this world, they bring with them influences from the real world, which is why Flash and Alpha were there.

I think it is a real place, mainly because of Medea. Jay didn't know Sierra before he was knocked out, but she was still in the Kid's world as Medea.

I think Medea was right- the kid's world is filled with kids who were somehow abandonned. Keith doesn't have a Dad, and Donna doesn't have any friends, so they show up in the other world. The problem with Jay is that he wasn't sure if his Dad abandonned him or not because of the comma he's only in one world or the other, and people in the regular world keep "unabandonning" him, trying to keep him with them, which drags him out of the kid's world.

I haven't seen the whole series, but that's my current theory

I think it all has to do with subconscience... I personly knew a person who was in a coma for a year. He knew all kinds of stuff that happened in real life when he was actually sure he dreamt about it. Personaly I do not believe in hyperkinetics but maybe telling the stories to the person in a coma, or maybe even get a grasp of tension in the air he can interpret it into vivid dreams...

But i'm no expert :)

its obvious ...

jays dream like state is his perception of reality while in his coma ... its how his mind is fighting the battle to come back into conciousness ... everything that goes on around him while in his bed in a coma, his mind picks up and turns it into a fantasy world and all the actions therein, and gives a meaning to each and opens up his subconcious memories of what happened to his father.

while this theory stands up for series 1 and 2 ... it falls apart for series 3 slightly as he is not unconcious anymore and could be construed as maybe delerious or just plain crazy.

i don't see how your cracked out theory is "obvious". he had never met mick in any way, and yet finger was always in downworld.

I think that our unconscious mind is very elaborate, and we only get glimpses into it in dreams. Looking at The Odyssey makes me wonder if people in comas might actually inhabit that unconscious world that might be very complex, and if they come out of the coma, they would forget much of it as we do with most of our dreams.

Of course, it was just a t.v. show, and there's no reason to expect everything to be perfect. The fact that a "kids" show could have so many complex ideas and not be able to be fit into any particular box shows just how unique and wonderful it was!

I would say that the downworld was just a figment of Jay's subconscious mind, except the one thing I believe counters that theory is that late in the first season Medea supposedly entered the upworld. Medea was in the tower and she put on the vest of power, and then moments later in the upworld Donna saw her as Sierra in one of the beds at driftwood. There was also an image on the screen of Medea laughing. Then in a later episode Medea actually said something like "I've been in Jay's world, I know why he's the wrecker". It kind of makes me wonder if it's possible that when Sierra was in a coma at first, she may have been Medea in the exact same world with Jay. But then of course you'd have to question why Medea was bad person at first even though Sierra always appeared to be good.

You also have to keep in mind that Donna when she fell asleep in Jay's room, could see into this world as well, so maybe it's all the kids subconcious joining together when they sleep/go unconcious/into a coma.

That would explain why Jay is still there in season three, part of his sunconcious is still present there(But more attached to his concious then the other kids who only actually see it while dreaming).
