Is this the definitive black sitcom? Why so?

So, I've noticed something. It seems like every black person loves and respects this show, but your average white person never saw it, doesn't know about it, or doesn't care about it.

Everyone (including white people) has seen Fresh Prince and Family Matters. Everyone of a certain age (including white people) has seen Good Times, Sanford and Son, and the Jefferson's. And of course everyone's seen the Cosby Show, but that's more of a show about people who happened to be black, rather than a black show.

What is it about Martin that made it a smash hit among black people, but not a crossover hit with white people? And does the fact that this show never crossed over with a white audience make it a more "legit" black sitcom?

What is your source that it wasn't a hit amongst white people or is that your opinion?

I have a degree from Stanford University in Caucasian American Studies with a minor in Television Sitcoms.

I don't know about that, I was living in Japan when this show aired and everyone knew about it and watched it especially Japanese people.

The definitive black sitcom is "Amos 'n' Andy".
