Maleficent?

I was just watching the episode "Heroes" from Season three of TLM, and when the guards showed the picture of the supposed "Sea Dragon", I immediately thought of Maleficent, because the sea dragon looked exactly like the dragon she transformed into!

Where the artists just paying homage to a Disney movie or where the artists lazy and couldn't come up with a unique character design?
