Piece of crap

People talk about variety: I don't know were they got that from, all this show ever has is indie rock bands. And just to stop it from looking like it's a show full of four white guys with guitars they'll put in some act from Africa, that no one has ever herd of, no one can understand and ain't no one ever going to buy there album. Or some crusty old blues jazz man from somewhere in the early 1900's who can barely breath, who only jools know and no one cares about and ain't no one going to buy his album. I have often wondered why he never has any modern urban music acts on, but I think the show speaks for it self.

I take it you didn't see the episodes with Alicia Keys, Usher, Scissor Sisters, Black Eyed Peas, Anita Baker, Nas, Ms Dynamite, Norah Jones etc...

I think you kinda have a point especially more recently.

"and you wonder why there are no modern urban acts on? maybe, just maybe its because urban acts are CR@P! 'Later' is a program for music fans (i.e. fans of real music) so we dont have time for cocky little scally kids who think they are hard by inflicting urban 'music' on us"

And my point is poven

I love this show, rarely does it have urban acts instead it has country, blues, jazz and rock which are some of my favourite types. The bands are sometimes unknown which is great for being introduced to different bands

This could well be the best signature ever

um what point? The only thing you really proved is you have no musical taste. There are great modern urban acts but they aren't popular probably because fools like you are catering to the overblown and overrated crap acts. But I see what the person was trying to say. Acts of rappers etc that try to seem tough like they have had a hard life but really they weren't poor and grew up in a suburb. Wow tough life. Older urban music is better. And when you comment on Jazz and blues you should realize that without that music the music you like would never exist since it is pretty much a product or child of that music.

Remakes suck.

How can a show which has indie, "some act from Africa" and a "Crusty old blues jazz man" not be varied.

Also hip hop is the best selling genre, it's completely saturated. Blues, soul, jazz, big-band, folk, samba, gailic, celtic and other non english language performers are hugely underepresented in this country. Just shut up and listen out for something you've never heard of. It's how I found Julie Fowlis and can see some of the biggest bands of today let off a bit of steam and do covers and their album tracks rather than lip-sync to their big hits for the third time that week (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UmuPT6xXq6E).

Also compared to most music hosts, Holland has genuine passion and knowledge having lead an eclectic musical career for near 30 years. So if anyone is going to fill a show with guests chosen by a most biased judgement, I would much rather have it be him than Fern Cotton.

Yeah i usually don't say this outright but you're an idiot. You must have terrible taste in music. I don't personally like the show but I do realize they have brilliant music acts there. Just because you uncultured and crass doesn't mean everyone else is. First of all they have acts that have made it all the time. And I think personally that showing indie acts to try and help original sounding artists is better than showing the same meandering suck up crap to overrated artists like most programs. I love African music as do many I know and we will be buying their albums just like we like Japanese artists, chinese, Korean, and French. We like good artists, we don't care where they are from. And for your information the artists he has on from other countries are world renowned. I guess your world is just too tiny to know them. And I love old blues jazz. And the best kind of music comes from older people who have experienced life. Do I really need a 16 year old teeny bopper singing to me about how tough their perfect life is? And once again world renowned not just people Jools knows and people do care and will buy their album. Here is a clue why they don't have modern urban music on: Everyone else does! Why be the same as everyone else? That is the problem with music in the US. Everything on the radio sounds the same and the music channels don't even show music most of the time anymore. And I am sorry but showing a countdown of what is on the very top what 10 spots is not a music program it is a butt kissing program saying you are popular so let's butt kiss you. Stations like FUSE (used to be much music) used to show all types both popular and indie and local and all genres of music and it used to be pretty much ALL music 24/7. Now all the stations are taken over by reality crap shows and mediocre chart programs. Bleh. And most the modern urban music today sounds terrible. It used to sound good but now it all sounds the same and every song is pretty much the same. Boring.

Remakes suck.

I agree that there is too much "guitar indie", and im a guitarist myself. But thats all i agree with. Hip-hop and rap is dying, its already dead live (they can't even sell tickets anymore). It isn't music, it's a medium used by brands to communicate with the younger generation. I don't want them on jools holland unless they have something unique to offer, which very very few of them do. Infact i think that the only groundbreaking hiphop being done today is outside the USA.

But i don't like to tarnish all urban music with the same brush. Lots of older listeners have an idea of urban music as being samples played over a soul beat with some uneducated yob rapping terrible prose on top, which is accurate for much of MTV. But what about some breakcore for example? I would kill to see Venetian Snares on JH, it would be such a refreshing change.

Similarly the only metal band i recall seeing was Metallica, who played pretty badly too. Why not have some of the few pioneering metal bands like Meshuggah play? I think JH should aspire to be more like the old John Peel show, literally anything goes if its got something to offer. Right now it feels like the same mainstream pseudo-jazz/rock every single week. If i want to hear radio1, i'll listen to radio1.

Jools likes all the bands that I like so he's ok with me! :D

Nick Cave, PJ Harvey, Moloko, Portishead, The Cardigans, Catatonia, Franz Ferdinand... seems he just likes good music.

back in 2005 when this post was made indie music was the most popula form of music so I can see why the original poster would have seen the show in that kind of light but I think now days the show is a lot diffrent.

reply

Really impressed with Jools' work on the piano when playing Call Me The Breeze this year.
