Great performances... but geez what an awful host!

This show picks the best artists in the contemporary music scene, and manages to schedule not so well known acts (especially in the U.S.), that have an incredible amount of talent.

My only issue with this show is that Jools Holland has not one bit of charm on him, and comes across as one cocky SOB.

You see him play piano?

Has a right to be a cocky SOB.

Sayonara, not to be confused with cyanide, which is, of course, goodbye in any language.

He IS pretty annoying

Gene Hunt: She's as nervous as a very small nun at a penguin shoot

He must doing something right. He has presented the show for 18 years and been a pop star for over 30 years.

Its that man again!!

I agree, the show's general concept is admirable, and I love to see new artists given exposure and a shot at success. However Jools Holland's manner of presentation just bugs the hell out of me. Specifically, it's the way he always seems to put himself in front of the aritsts, both physically and symbolically. He dominates the camera then points back, mumbles the name of whatever performer and essentially shouts "Action!" like they are his personal trained circus animals. After they finish playing he greedily shoves his mug back in front of the camera, then readily dismisses them in favor of the next act. Repeat.

He needs to put more limelight on the featured artists, step aside, and let them speak/show for themselves, with less of his barking egotistical circus showman antics. Remember Don Kirshner's rock concerts and The Midnight Special back in the USA 70s? Jools could take a lesson from these and act as a producer with occasional camera time, but let various musicians actually host the show. Nice idea! Otherwise his pompous shouting face in the camera gets tiresome very quickly, so much that I find the show virtually unwatchable (or just hit the Mute button when he's blabbering).

"been a pop star for over 30 years"
No he left Squeeze in 1981 and hasn't really been a "pop star" since then.

It's his show. He's the host. Yes, he's going to introduce the musical acts and put himself in the camera while doing it. And he keeps things moving because they fit a lot of music into one episode. This isn't an interview show, and it's not The Midnight Special. It's its own show...let it be that.

reply

Smooth! It is.

reply

He's funny.

The start of the season is always when I start living in Nevis for the winter.

Everyone will watch the show. It's pop. Yes. So what. There's been some great live music. Nothing like this happens in the USA.

I think he's a great host with the best all around music show in the world. We have nothing like it produced in the US. Anything produced in America is strictly Urban Pop and Hip Hop or geared towards teens. If you're an over 25 year old rock fan, there is absolutely nothing on TV or radio for you. specially if you're lookking for new rock acts or new music from old established acts. Jools' Later features the whole spectrum.
