Caine 'spider climbs' up wall?

Had a bad day, and I need a good laugh. What episode did Caine try to find the girl at Centre Island and have to "spider climb" up the wall to get her. Probably the best scene in the history of the show. Does anyone know what that episode is called or where I can find it?

lol I just watched that one yesterday...it's called "Laurie's Friend" Season 2 Episode 5

The one where he spider climbs down a cliff (which is just as funny) is "Out Of The Woods" also Season 2 Episode 8

The episode was Laurie's Friend, season 2 episode 5.

She had fled kidnappers into a Wilderness Adventure water ride that had been drained for the off season. She climbed onto the roof of the building that served as a gold miner's cave, and got stuck. Caine, through the jade pendants, received the message she was stuck, and where to find little Laurie.

My favorite parts of this episode: Laurie describes her secret friend to Kermit so he can make a composite picture, only at the end, the computer composite went from a full face shot, to a three quarter profile shot of David Carradine, and even more amazing: in the "computer composite" he wearing his customary piped silk shirt. Wow,what technology can do!

Laurie got the idea for her secret friend from the old Wanted Posters for Kwai Chang Caine Sr. that they used in the original Kung Fu show. This poster bears little to no resemblance to David Carradine, especially now that he is older, yet her imaginary, kindly gunslinger friend nonetheless is a dead ringer. He even has the same wispy, lifeless gray hair that Kwai Chang Caine Jr was sporting at the time, despite the fact the poster depicts a disgruntled looking hairless man.

The Spider Climb up the wall is another one of my favorite funny scenes. They didn't even try to make it look plausible. As our favorite apothecary zips up the wall, his arms and legs are moving along the wall at a slower pace than his body is moving. I know to actually touch the wall would have meant that his body would swing on wire holding him, but at least it would have looked more real that the half hearted underwater movements he was actually making.

You can buy bootlegs of this series on the web, no one seems to know if they will ever have an official DVD release. The quality isn't super great, but you can at least catch up on the episodes you may have missed. Or, revisit those old episodes that give you a good laugh on bad days.

Sorry it took me so long to answer! After weeks of checking this board every day with no new posts, I was starting to get disheartened.

Hope this helps!

That spider climb scene sounds awesome. I don't recall it off the top of my head.

I always find it hilarious in the episode where Caine goes back in time to Russia or something in the winter to find a secret diary page and it plays the cheesiest vortex effect I've ever seen. The effect looks like it's from the 1960's in terms of the real-life technology used to make it; with Caine flaiing around extremely sillily (hope that's a word - LOL) in front of the terrible CGI background (if it even is CGI?).

How would you guys rank the vortex scenes against the spider climb scenes? Ha ha!

reply

Oh, I don't know, I thought the vortex the pretty good! Oblong, orange, asymmetrical, spinning. It was better than the typical 80s "blue laser in fog". The episode was Retribution, Season 2, episode 22. I do agree the flailing was silly, it was like Caine was pretending to be a giant baby.

My recollection of the silliness of it probably has to do with how Caine was merged into the effect. It didn't work at all. I suppose the effect itself might have looked good without Caine in it, but that's not what was presented on the show. Pasting Caine on top of that effect is where it got fubared.

Only David Carradine can make such a
Cool and awesome character like Caine, bringing him to life.

I just watched Laurie's Friend, and I always wonder when I see that episode - Is that ride still there?

Anybody know?
