Something That Sucks

One thing that sucks is the fact that nobody is ever going to read this post.

The other things that sucks is this: The "Roseanne" episode "Of Ice and Men," which aired the same night as the premiere episode of this series, originally ended with the Conner family sitting down to watch the premiere of "The Jackie Thomas Show." Seamlessly, after that scene, the new series began. Personally, although an obvious bit of marketing, I think that's kinda brilliant.

Sadly, the DVD version of the "Complete" fifth season does not feature this ending, but rather a blooper, just like the episode featured in syndication. This makes me truly angry.

"I've flown this route before."
"When was that?"
"IT WAS ON THE WINGS OF A DEMON!"

Well, now there's one less thing that sucks, dude. :)

I remember several segues from Roseanne into Jackie Thomas, and yeah, it was a very clever move, though clearly something that wouldn't have been done if the star of Jackie Thomas hadn't been sleeping with the executive producer and star of Roseanne.

Roseanne and Tom had such a bitter breakup, she went to great lengths to obliterate him from everything she legally could do. This, after she had already gone to great lengths altering old syndicated and videotape episodes to bill her as Roseanne Arnold instead of Roseanne Barr. That may be why they removed the segue from "Of Ice and Men", but it might have been a royalties issue. The segment when he was talking to Michael Fishman at the end of Roseanne and asked him if he liked Tom's new show is still in there.

I thought Arnold's role on Roseanne was fairly pointless, clearly written just to give him a part to play. So, I wasn't expecting much from Jackie Thomas, but I was surprised--it wasn't a bad show at all! But it never really found an audience, and I think a lot of people didn't like having the show "forced" upon them.

Tom may have been the Yoko Ono of the 90s, but in the long run he has proven himself to be a solid, if not brilliant actor. Whatever he does in his personal life, he deserves the career success he's found.

When the episode mentioned plays in syndication, the ending featured is the same ending that played during the original prime time premiere. I live in Canada though, but I've never seen it end any other way besides the Conner family sitting in the audience to watch the premiere of The Jackie Thomas Show, and Tom Arnold comes out to talk to the crowd.

I've wanted to pick up the first 6 or 7 seasons of Roseanne on DVD for a while but I've heard so many bad things about the sets, that I'm always put off. Especially about seasons one and two. I wonder why the DVDs were edited and altered.

If you are still on the fence about getting it, I would say shop carefully if you can. I loved "Roseanne" (well, except for season 9) so I have the entire series on DVD. The packaging and formatting varies wildly; some of the versions I have used very very poor packaging--all the discs are in flimsy little paper envelopes and simply stacked together in the plastic box, not secured jewel case style. In one season's package, all the discs were in the SAME envelope, and of course a couple of them are scratched. Most of the ones I have were received as gifts, so I didn't see the packaging beforehand, but it's possible I wouldn't have been able to tell from the outside, anyway. If it's light and rattle-y, it might be a poor package.

Extras like commentaries and interviews are few and far between, and they are really, really poor. One season has several short interviews with Lecy Goransen, and she comes off as being stoned. I wondered if she might have been ill or injured and taking some sort of painkiller. She looks frozen, nervous, and completely awkward. Lecy is very pretty, but they somehow made her look really bad, maybe it was the makeup and lighting. She has a dopey smile plastered on her face, and talks verrrryyyyyy slowly, with a lot of dead air between sentences, and she just sort of rambles. There is one funny story about when the producers wouldn't allow her to cut her hair, and when Roseanne found out about it, she grabbed a pair of scissors and chopped Lecy's ponytail off.

I understand the first issue of Season 1 was issued with only the heavily trimmed versions that were used in syndication. There are full episode versions available now, but again try to shop carefully and be sure you get one that says "full uncut episodes" or something like that.

Back to the board's topic, the versions I have DO include several "tags" that segue into Jackie Thomas, and in one episode, there's a fairly long scene where the Conner family goes to a taping of the show and completely takes over the audience. Apparently she eventually got over the idea of pretending she never knew him.
