Connor says this toward the end of the pilot.So did they plan on Richie being an immortal from the pilot.When i watched this back in the 90s i took this line to mean that they were worried about Richie exposing them.But watching again last night and knowing what Richie will become the line takes on a whole new meaning.I always assumed Richie being an immortal was something they just decided on as the series went on.

A bit of both.

They were always playing with the idea but didn't decide to fully commit to it until Alexandra Vandernoot who played Tessa decided to leave.

There was also the knowledge that the actor would mature if the series ran five or six years. I think that was the reason they offed him in season five.

^^ Was that the reason or did they wanna just shock the viewers I mean all the actors were getting older it wasn't that noticeable.

My son who is nine picked up on that line straight away and asked me if richie was going to be immortal as well!!!
