Have yourself a goofy little Christmas

Anyone remember it?

I'll give him 20 more minutes-and that's it!- Airplane!

reply

Yup, I have it on tape, and watched it earlier!

(Goofy is singing "Deck The Halls") Pete- Hey you, shaddup! This ain't no Osmond special!

reply

One of my favorite Christmas specials.

reply

Yep. Still watch it on video at Christmas time

plus there's the fact that for some strange reason the reindeer dance song pops into my head a couple of times a year at random, I'll be going about my day and suddenly: AY CARAMBA!!! Doing the Reindeer Rumba! Ay Caramba, doing the Christmas dance. So I think of the movie every now and then even when it's not Christmas.

I tend to think of this special as the last GT before A GOOFY MOVIE (yes, I know they were still airing new episodes after this aired, but the Disney afternoon scheduling was often haphazard in showing the series out of order, ala DARKWING DUCK). The special's writer Jymn Magon also wrote the script for AGM, and one sees some similarities: Goofy being ignorant about Max, Max bristling over his dad's behavior, the appearance of a family tradition, Goofy getting depressed over Max, Max saving the day by embracing the tradition. There's also a chat Goofy and Max have about changing times:

Goofy: “It’s getting harder and harder making Christmas special for ya, Max.”
Max: “Like when I was a kid, huh?”
Goofy: “Exactly.”
Max: “Well, I’m growing up, Dad. But I still love Christmas, and I still love you.”

Sound familiar? Here's another exchange:

Goofy: “I was only tryin' to take my boy out fishing, okay!”
Max: “’I’m not your little boy anymore, dad! I’m grown up! I have my own life!”
Goofy: “I know that! I just wanted to be a part of it! You’re my son, Max. No matter how big ya get, y’ll always be my son.”
Makes me wonder if Magon wrote both dialogues.

In an essay, I wrote about it:
"Indeed, this makes AGTXMAS all the more poignant. Father and son lovingly hug each other, maybe for the last time until the waterfall embrace in AGM. That possibility might be questioned. However, it is definite that Max will never declare ‘love’ to Goofy for the remainder of his appearances (A lack that Goofy will wistfully remark in the ‘Hi Dad soup’ scene in AGM). Thus, the scene is very bittersweet in view of the coming storm."
