They sold the house?

I haven't seen this show in a long time. But do Blanche, Sophia and Rose sell the house from GOLDEN GIRLS and actually move into the hotel that they purchase on GOLDEN PALACE?

reply

Yes, they do move out of the house and into the Golden Palace. The first episodes opens with the furniture being moved out.

I was wondering why is that Sophia,Blanche, and Rose decided to sell the house and run the Golden Palace hotel.

My guess is that without Bea Arthur staying on for another year of The Golden Girls, they needed to do something to make things interesting since there was no Dorothy.

The first episode shows the sale sign on the front lawn and the furniture being moved out. There's nothing specifically mentioned about why they decided to sell the house and buy a hotel. There is a scene during this first episode where the "girls" find out they need to make a certain amount of money or they will lose the place. Rose says to Blanche "you said - let's buy a hotel girls, run a little inn. Guests will come from all around. We'll never be lonely, we'll be rich, we'll be happy and we'll be featured in Travel and Leisure." That's not much to go on but it gives the impression it was Blanche's idea.

I was shocked that they sold the house. In one episode of GG, Blanche had refused to sell her roommates each a share of the house, talking about how much the house had meant to her because of its connection to her late husband.

Geoffrey Rush is the best actor... ever...!!!

reply

yeah, but she does sell them the shares in the end of the episode--which means they all must have made money off the sale of her house only a few years later! She got scammed!!!

The concept of The Golden Palace really never made sense. I think that the producers came up with it overnight. NBC certainly didn't buy it, hence the move to CBS - and then of course CBS put it on Friday nights - not a good night to be on TV.

To me - it would've made more sense of them to just do an 8th season of The Golden Girls without Dorothy. Sure it wouldn't have been the same and the show probably would still have ended by the end of its 9th season, but I think it would have lasted a little longer.

Despite there attempts at going in a different direction with Golden Palace, as Betty White said in an interview "it turned into Golden Girls in a hotel." So in essence it was essentially Golden Girls Season 8 without Dorothy and with a new title in a hotel setting. As much of a great talent Don Cheadle is, his character added nothing to the show, and neither did Cheech Marin's.

I still wish we would have gotten a closure episode to the end of Season 1 - but they were told they would be getting a 2nd season and then it was canceled at the last minute.

I agree completely that they should have tried one more season in the original concept because it WORKED. Having them sit around a big hotel kitchen with male characters (I am guessing the male co stars were around, I have not seen an episode in a long time) just was not the same. I feel the show failed largely because of the move. That house was sorely missed.
What they could have tried, which I mentioned today on the Classic TV board, was have the character that Debbie Reynolds played in just one episode move into Dorothy's old room. She was supposed to take her place when Dorothy almost remarried Stan. She may not have blended in well with those 3 characters but it had to have been better than this show.

I disagree. I love don cheadle's character. I love his relationship with the girls. Cheech is ok. I neither love him nor dislike him.

I agree about Cheadle. That is the first time my husband and I noticed him. I've seen him in a few things, but as soon as he appeared in Ironman 2, my first thought was 'oh, from GP'.

I HATE the idea of them selling the house! My idea is that they rented it or something, then primarily lived in the hotel, but I can't believe Blanche would sell it.
