Was Season 6 the best season?

I've been rediscovering this program on Amazon Prime. I watched it on CBS in the 90s, but I did not see all the episodes. And I don't think I saw the last season-- so I've been looking at season 6, and it's very good.

Yes the stories are "darker" and there is a lot of soap opera drama going on. But I think it's very balanced in terms of who is being featured in each episode-- it's truly an ensemble show at this point, with a very multicultural feel. I remember the early years being more about Dr. Mike, then about Dr. Mike & Sully's marriage. So it's kind of refreshing to see the rest of the townsfolk featured more prominently in these later episodes.

What do others think-- did the show get better near the end? Or did it get worse?

But how exactly did it get "darker" in the 6th season? Remember that we got the horrors of "Wash*ta: part 2"
(where a bunch of Cheyennes (including women and children) were slaughtered) in the 3rd season, and then "Brother's keeper" (where Ingrid catches rabies and dies) in the 4th season. So I just can't agree with the notion, that the last season was so much darker than the previous ones.

Intelligence and purity.

Well that's why I put the word "darker" in quotation marks. It's all subjective.

The one where Dr. Mike is shot has all those nightmare flashes of her reliving the ordeal. The lighting and camera work is literally darker in those scenes. Also, during the storm, when the tree branch crashes through the kitchen window, the atmosphere is tense and somewhat more violent.

But as you say, comparing these episodes from season 6 to stories in the earlier seasons, we see that the writers never shied away from heavier drama. But maybe there is more of it in the last season. I'm not sure. I do know that I like the season 6 episodes I have been watching on Amazon Prime. I think they're very well-written and well-played by the actors.

I agree that season six was darker. It dealt with some heavy subjects. Yes, there were tragic episodes in previous seasons, but season six had a lot of them. Plus, Sully wasn't there as much, so there was that. But people have different opinions about how much they liked the last season compared to the others. My mother liked it the best, perhaps because she wasn't a big Sully fan. But after years of playing these characters, everyone had it pretty well down, plus the writers did, too, so yes, it was all very well done. But I know I did a lot of crying during that sixth season, and it wasn't just because I knew it was the last one.

BTW, season six is really out of order as it runs on the DVDs, which is the same as Amazon Prime, I'm guessing. If you'd like an episode guide that gives the best order for the episodes to make the most sense, I'd be happy to email it to you. Just send me a private message with your email address. If you never plan on watching it again, this probably isn't necessary, but if you do, it really helps to get things in the best order so the story makes sense. 😉
