Sophy's mother ..

If Aunt Sarah (Oliver's mum) was Uncle Richard's sister, why did she (Aunt Sarah) refer to Sophy (to Helena) as Richard's half sister's "little accident". Surely, if Sophie's mother was Richard's half sister, then she was her half sister too??

It possible that Sarah and Sophy's mother wasn't related at all if Sarah and Richard were half-siblings, too. I mean if Sophy's mother was related only to Richard, not Sarah or... Calypso's parents. That might explained the pretty strange fact that Sophy had to live with her uncle, not aunts.

But it's just an idea. I've read the book long ago and don't remember whether those detailes as have or haven't been explained in the text.

Thank you. :-)

I did wonder about this as well, it's a curious thing for Sarah to describe Sophy's mother as 'Richard's half sister' and not 'my half sister' - unless of course as suggested Sarah herself is also a half sister to Richard on the other side.

I also got the impression that Sarah does not care too much for Richard as she says to Helena that she wondered why Helena married Richard. She also doesn't seem to make much of Helena's statement that she (Helena) dislikes Sophy.

In fact Sarah seems to get on with Helena more than her own siblings which is surprising when you consider that Helena is only connected to Sarah by Richard's(defunct) marriage to Helena.

I still love it though.

I had suggested that Sarah and Richard aren't siblings (that Sarah's husband and Richard are siblings) -- but that was before I saw ep 4, in which Helena clearly says to Sarah, "He's your brother."

The writer should have found a way to make the relationship clear; he (clumsily) provided a lot of necessary background details via dialog in ep 1, so one more would hardly have been problematic.

Just one more example of sloppiness in an overall disappointing production -- a production I had high hopes for, given the cast and director.
