Ade won't do it.

reply

Well its a pity if he wont. Its a different set up to the live shows and should be quite safe for them both. They really should do it and it would be quite cheap. I mean the majority of the episodes are set in the flat and i'm sure the series would be funny if teh flat was used in every episode.

It would be great, but Adrian is happier doing crap like Teenage Kicks, ADE EDMONDSON! YOU MAKE THE NEXT SERIES OF BOTTOM RIGHT THIS MINUTE!

Its hard to think ten years ago he was directing Guest House Paradiso. I'd say the most likely thing to bring them back together would be in a Comic Strip film, if there is another.

There was one recently.

reply

Yes but it wasn't very popular and only Rik appeared, but Ade said on the special features on the DVD's he'd do another Comic Strip if it went back to the old style or something. This inteview was back in 2005 though.

The reason Red Dwarf - Back to Earth sucked is cos, since series 7 onwards, Rob Grant has had nothing to do with it. The first 6 series were classics. Series 7, 8 and BTE were not in the same ballpark without Grant.

If they made another series of Bottom it would still be Rik & Ade writing it, so the quality of the writing would be the same as the 3 series they did make.

As a Bottom fan, I would not like to see any "new" epsiodes.
As the later live shows prove, it's just not funny anymore. The last 2 live shows were more embarassing than funny.

I'd rather they just leave it as is. At least you can't do any more damage then.

I wouldn't be surprised if they did one final Bottom tour eventually. Edmondson said a while back that working with Rik Mayall got to be impossible after Mayall accident as his personality changed and he became more angry, aggressive and difficult - they're still friends but he won't work with him is what he stated. Who knows though, it's guaranteed money for them if they did it and we'd all lap it up - and they know it. If Edmondson's work starts drying up, expect a Bottom tour thereafter.

I like the Bottom TV series much moreso than the live shows because they were much more tightly scripted, didn't descend into corpsing and knob gags and because they had to keep things relatively clean, they had to rely on lots of weird turns of phrase to get a large portion of the laughs and those really set the show apart. Limitations lead to innovation as they say. So, what I mean by all that is that I would like to see a 4th series - in principle. In reality, they're both men in late middle age and for that reason alone, the series wouldn't be as funny. There's also the difficulty in working with Rik post accident and Ade's interests outside of comedy that would mean, for now, his heart probably wouldn't be in it. Best case scenario would be Ade's suggestion that maybe if they waited until they were properly old, they could take that 4th series script, update it and then go with it.

I still haven't seen the last show (weapons-grade) yet so I can't comment on that, but I agree that after the first live show the shows went the wrong way (although the 4th is going in the right direction after the break)..
The biggest problem with the live shows was the fact they didn't have to rethink their jokes so they were suitable for 'primetime'-tv and still had the sharp edge, they just used a lot of profanity which is funny for a minute or two but not 1.5 hours also the fake 'Oh I forgot my lines' was funny in the first show, but was in the latter shows so obvious it wasn't real..
It would be great if they were constrained by not being able to use profanity, so they have to rethink their jokes like they did on the tv-shows..
And ofcourse it's harder to write a 1.5 hour 'bottom'episode and keep it interesting and funny as it would with only 30 minutes..

I personally would love to see another series, but really with them having aged just as much as the last show how fun would that be.. 50 year old richie still trying to have it off.. LOL..
There was actually a fourth series written, but not aproved back then..

reply

Not by Dave though. Did anyone actually laugh at the new episodes of Dwarf?

reply

Yes I did, they were better than Series 8 at least, Redge Warf was classic!

As much as i'd love to see more Bottom, I think it just wouldn't be funny anymore, it would go the same way as Red Dwarf - Back to Earth was ever so self aware that they just felt like caracatures. Which is how Bottom would feel, especially since the fourth and fifth live shows felt that way.

reply

Rik and Ade have very much moved on from BOTTOM.

reply

....so much so that it's back next year!

Not a good idea. Red Dwarf is a cash cow for Naylor because the idiot doesn't have the talent to make anything else. It's all he knows. A one trick pony is he. And unlike Red Dwarf the Bottom cast and crew KNOW WHEN TO GIVE IT A REST AND LEAVE THINGS BE!. They know when enough is enough. Time to move on and all that.

Bottom was awesome for it's time. And it's through this that the show still kicks arse today in the form IT WAS not how it would be if they made more. Red Dwarf started going downhill on series six so it did. And it has never recovered since. The BBC did the right thing even if it was a tad too late they still did it though (they canceled RD). Only for some desperate channel to pick it up and try to make a name for themselves by doing so.

NO to more Bottom!.
