Nigel Planer as Spud Gun?

I suspect this question may have been asked before. But...

I've always wondered whether the character of Spud Gun was initially written for Nigel Planer, in order to have a sort of 'Young Ones' cast reunion, but then NP somehow decided not to do it. Does anyone know if this is the case?

Don't get me wrong - I think Steven O'Donnell does a really good job in the role. But I'm sure you can see where I'm coming from. It would have been a really nice thing to do, and I'm sure the majority of Bottom fans were 'TYO' fans (like me), who would have loved it.

I remember wondering about this the first time I saw one of the Spud/Dave episodes, and I've been surprised never to see anyone else write or talk about it, as I can't believe I'm the only person who has had this thought.
But maybe I haven't been looking hard enough. :)

Sure. As I say, I'm not disparaging O'Donnell's performance in the role at all. I actually think he was/is quite under-rated as a comedy actor. I'm not sure why he didn't get (or perhaps I should say he hasn't yet had!) the success he deserved. I mean I don't think he would ever have been a lead player, but apart from his role as Spud I have seen him in very few things.

I agree with you about the wide spread of different types of actor too.
