Was the series supposed to end like that?

I'm a new Between the Lines fan, I've really been enjoying watching this series on YouTube. I've just watched the season 3 finale The End User. What a devastating ending! That final shot of poor Maureen watching the barge explode was so sad. Was it planned that the series would end that way or was there supposed to be a season 4 but it was cancelled?

I'd say this is hands down one of the best British detective series ever made, lots of realism and good stories. Tony, Harry and Maureen are three of the most interesting and complex characters in TV history.

Go to bed Frank or this is going to get ugly .

I agree that this is a great series with great acting and characters.
I don't know if there was meant to be another series after series 3 but a lot of fans and critics felt that series 3 was a series to far but I liked most of it and like you say the end was stunning.
