Underwear on the outside....?

Great show - but, seriously, what's up with the underwear on the outside getup? To be fair, it's not just a thing with Batman... How did that become a superhero thing?

Are you just discovering this now?

Are you going to answer my question, or just ask a retorical one? Ain't got no time for that.

Seriously, there had to be some kind of genesis of the underwear on the outside thing for superheroes....

You do have time for it.

Are you just discovering the animated series for the first time, CoffeeBean? Welcome to the greatest Batman incarnation of all time!!

As for the underwear question I have no clue. It sure never bothered me though. The animation, especially for the early 90s, was superb!! It was all drawn on black paper, hence the fantastic noirish quality. I bought the Volume 1 DVD set about a year back but have yet to go through it all - been busy with other things. The show sure holds up though.

No, I remember watching it as a kid - my son however has just discovered it and I'm going back and re-watching it with him. It's almost like watching it for the first time - except there are certain scenes that I remember. Some of the title animations jog my memory - I saw the one for the Two-Face episode and I got chills. The animation is definitely some of the best ever for TV.

My first memory of this series was watching "I've Got Batman in My Basement" as a kid - on FOX KIDS during its initial run. I must have been 11 or 12 at the time. I instantly fell in love with the show and that particular episode became my favorite of the series for the longest time! The Penguin also immediately became my favorite BATMAN villain. It'll be interesting to revisit this episode soon and see how it has held up - I haven't seen it in decades! From what I understand it's not a fan favorite. I think it must be those pesky kids! (as they would say on SCOOBY-DOO ).

Now, with an episode like "Two-Face" watching it as an adult it really delivers! But as a kid I didn't care for it too much. Probably because I found the character too freaky/disgusting and the whole story a bit too disturbing and too much of a downer. My favorites as a kid were those with Penguin, Joker, and Riddler!

Ha, me too. Only I hated it and thought it was just another cheesy show with kid sidekicks as protagonists, and Batman was just a side character. Kinda like when the Super Friends would focus on the Wonder Twins instead of the Justice League.

Fortunately, some time later, I ended up watching Feat of Clay and knew that was what the show was really like and loved it from that point on.

This video explains that the outside undies (actually call trunks, apparently) were meant to be reminiscent of circus strongmen, to emphasize the heroes' great strength. They also served to give them clearer outlines, since the old-timey graphics back in the thirties and forties were not exactly high-res.

Thit and thpin!

Yes, this type of costume was based on circus strongmen and acrobats. And those are trunks, not "underwear."

Other Superheroes have that as part of their costume. Superman, Wolverine, and Cyclops have that look.
