Not enough Riddler

I've been marathoning this show recently, and I notice there are only a few episodes in which the Riddler is prodominant. That's kinda disappoitning.

The writers stated that they didn't use Riddler that much because he often made stories too long, too complex and too bizarre. And that they also had trouble devising his riddles.

Its amazing how people hang around message boards of movies they dont like

I suppose but these writers could have done it. I mean they were able to give Bane a pretty sweet episode in only a 22 minute arc. My guess was that they just didn't come up with a good enough origin for him. They give these utterly tragic backstories to Two-Face, Mr. Freeze and Harley, or leave much ambiguity as with Joker and Ra's that they remain facsinating. Even the character Baby Doll gets one of the most dramatic episodes. But with Riddler, he's just like "Oh well I've been fired? well then fug it. Supervillain. Cause yeah. That's reasonable." So we get a couple episodes that are cool little conflict Batman has to resolve, but nothing dramatically compelling that makes the writers want to keep using him.

I only make this thread because I want to find good Riddler reads. Supposedly, he's one of Batman's best villains, but whenever I see him pop up in a comic, people just kinda beat him up and take his sh!t. So I want to find a comic where I find the character dark or tragic or relatable or genuinely menacing. I just a nifty li'l obstical for Batman to overcome.

I think that's one of the biggest drawbacks to Batman villains; most of them are sympathetic (save for The Joker) they come from horrible backgrounds; with reasons why the way they are. Villains that just choose to be evil are a rarity. That said, The Riddler is just largely misunderstood; his genius is mistaken as social awkwardness and his ego his huge. His plan is to just be smarter than Batman, on his own there's not a whole lot of violence involved in that.

I know this reply is pretty late, but if you want to read a darker Riddler story, try "Dark Knight, Dark City" by Peter Milligan and Kieron Dwyer. Riddler acts a lot more violent and cruel than usual, and the fact that he's acting out-of-character is actually a plot point, with one of his baffled henchmen asking what the heck is wrong with him. Aside from that, it makes a pretty interesting use of the Riddler's gimmick, making Batman unwittingly do his work for him.

Thanks, but I actually do own Dark Knight, Dark City, and while it's a fun and unpredictable read, and he is more menacing in that than he usually is in other comics, I still don't get why he does what he does. All other Batman villains have a clear motivation for doing the werido crap they do.

And i call bullsh!t on that seeing as how 2004's The batman did well with it's own version of the Riddler. I don't care if that version looked like Marilyn manson. I base my POV not on his appearance, but on how good with riddles he actually used. His every sentence was some kind of riddle, and his "knowledge is power" philosophy fit very well. Because that's what the Riddler is supposed to be: a villain that makes you think. Something Bruce Timm and the gang FAILED to do with their TAS Riddler.

Sounds like you're suffering from what I'm suffering from. Imagine how cool a Nolan Batman v Riddler film would have been. Instead we got Bane who isn't even in the same stratosphere of being as compelling as Riddler. Nolan could have done great things with him.

I can understand Nolan's reluctance to use the Riddler right after the Joker given the similarities in their modus operandi.

yes lol KCJ506 that is a good reason. Personally im not a fan of the riddler, I just don't like how he flaunts his "intelligence" lol more like arrogance and ego really. But his riddles and death traps are interesting. I just think it is annoying how he thinks so highly of himself and the world is beneath him, let's just say Joker has more personality.

Well, he is a criminal. We're not supposed to like what he does.

Can't stop the signal.

I guess the Riddler was a tad underplayed :(
