Question re the BTAS continuation comics

The Batman Adventures was a DC Comics comic book series featuring Batman. It is different from other Batman titles in that it is set in the continuity (and style) of Batman: The Animated Series as opposed to the regular DC Universe...

Has anybody read them, and if so do you recommend them? I love BTAS but I've never read these.

The issues are pretty great, they feel like missing episodes of the series, but with less restrictions meaning that there was a little more violence than TAS was allowed. It also followed up on a few episodes and brought back some characters we never saw again in the show (for example, there's an incredible story with Hugo Strange that does him much more justice than the show did, and Harvey's fiance Grace makes a reappearance). Most of it is considered canon and gets referenced in other DCAU material, though there are some stories that are contradicted later (an appearance from Superman before his animated series which doesn't fit into the events of the show), and some stories were adapted into episodes of The New Batman Adventures (and are still worth a read since the episodes had to cut out some material from the comics which made the stories even better in my opinion)

That sounds really interesting.

Do you know if they used unused scripts for the comics?

I'm sure I remember reading somewhere that the story Two Timer was at some point meant to be a two part episode. I wish it were since it had the Joker and Two Face interacting and seeing the voice actors go at it would have been great, it's also the aforementioned reappearance of Grace. It was a pretty major story for Two Face and was written by Paul Dini where most of them weren't, which further indicates to me that it was meant to be part of the show. Generally speaking, I like how the comic used Two Face since they kept him as a pretty tragic figure throughout whereas the show would often reduce him to a much less complex character.

Many thanks for the info!

Pretty much only the ones written by Paul Dini are considered "in continuity" with the show; the others are good, but there are so many contradictions that it does hinder the enjoyment somewhat imo. I would not consider any of them to be solid canon, but ymmv about if you like them or not. Kelly Puckett's stories are good, many like Ty Templeton but I consider him a bit too in love with his own cleverness at times. The Scott Peterson/Tim Levins Gotham Adventures issues were unreadable, stay away from those!
