Peter I as Paul's Grandfather?

Empress Elizabeth: "Looks well does he not? Quite the resemblance of his grandfather. Peter the Great."

Here's the breakdown

Emperor Peter I=m=Catherine I
|
v
Anna Petrovna (daughter)=m= Charles Frederick, Duke of Holstein-Gottorp
|
v
Emperor Peter III (grandson)=m=Sophie of Anhalt-Zerbst {Empress Catherine II}
|
v
Emperor Paul (great-grandson)

Elizabeth didn't mean this literally. She had forcibly taken Paul from Catherine as as soon as he was born and treated him as if he was her own son. It is figuratively, to humiliate Catherine, that Elizabeth said that he had the looks of her father, Peter the Great, as if he was her own son.

It also alludes to the fact, by the side, that maybe Peter III was indeed the father as he was a descendant of Peter the Great, and not Orlov.

I think she said it to protect Paul. She confirms his birthright so to speak.
To silence rumours Paul wasn't a son of Peter IMHO.

Will Graham: I don't find you that interesting.
Hannibal Lecter: You will.
