movie is based on the novel by Jin Yong(the alias the author goes by and better known by).
Just one of the 14 martial arts novel by this author. Fantasy martial art stories, with many many characters and complex story line. Characters relations are traceable from between the novels... it's amazing.

and it's so addictive that schools ban such novels believe it or not.

imagine lord of the rings times 14, from the same author... it's THAT huge, ask anyone who is familiar with Jin Yong's novels.

i should also mention that this movie is only part of one of the 14 novels...

to completely film one of the novels will be a movie probably longer than lord of the rings!

The best version that I've seen so far is the 40-episode series filmed in China. It's as close to the original Swordsman novel as you can get. Unfortunately, they have not released a English-translated DVD version as of now.

Yes, I know the English name is pretty stupid..."Blood Cold and Proud Hot"!? What the hell... Hopefully some of the fan-sub groups out there will do a better job at the translation so all the English speakers can enjoy this great story written by the legendary Jin Yong.

I totally agree with the translation of the title, it's so irrelevant and inaccurate. The better translation is "The Smiling, Proud Wanderer" or "The State of Divinity," the name of the musical score. I've actually seen the series, and it is awesome (and actually a much closer adaptation of the Jin Yong novel than Tsui Hark's Swordsman series). Only one problem with the series is that it starts off quite slow (the first 10 episodes were a drag).

By the way, for those who don't already know, Jin Yong also goes by the name Louis Cha.
