Completely incoherent...
This must be the worst Asian film I've ever watched and it is surely Jet Li's worst.Let's blame the script for this one(or the editor).

What? How can you call Once Upon a Time in China one of his worst. Have you seen his new over the top action stuff?
This has to be one of my favourite martial arts films/series because it has a good story and amazing chorography
I'm not even a Jet Li fan and I love this film with a passion.
.... it has a good story and amazing chorographyThe OP was right in using the adjective incoherent to describe the story.
There was some Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon kind of fights that were at times unrealistic but the way they were shot and made where amazing
shareI loved CTHD, which was a wuxia film/story and within that fantasy/universe everything made sense, besides being beautifully filmed and featuring characters we care about.
But Once Upon etc. is not wuxia and Hark Tsui is clearly not in Ang Lee's league as a director.
A lot of the fights just appear to be big gang brawls, where curiously no one seems to get too hurt with hands, swords, knives etc. Then periodically we have these soldiers wander in, who start blowing people apart with rifles and guns a la The Wild Bunch.
There seems to be this huge inconsistency about the film, over what it wants to be and what we actually end up seeing on the screen. You even look at these boards and people can't decide. Is it an historical epic, a comedy, a drama, a political statement (as some posters allege), or just a trumped up martial arts film?
I'm in the OP's court. I just thought it was a complete mess.

Can it not be all?Of course it can. But it has to have coherence and meaning, neither of which was in abundance in this mess.
Have you by any chance seen the second and third films?I had the opportunity, but seeing this first one put me off.
IMO the latter OUATIC films were better than the first especially the second film with Donnie Yen.
shareI prefer this series over Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon TBH, I wasn't very impressed with the latter film.
