AGH!!! I can't believe I finally found this movie! I could have sworn it had 'Rose' in the title, then I remembered more about it and realized Reese Witherspoon was in it, so I plugged her name in and BOOM! This is DEFINITELY the best TV movie EVER. I saw it at a slumber party 10 years ago and it never left my mind. I was too young at the time to realize the acting was a huge part of what I loved about it. Patricia Arquette is BRILLIANT! I'm not even sure I knew it was an actress and not a real deaf person. I'm not usually into movies that some might call 'sappy' but this hit me hard. I could watch it a million times.

I agree,

WILDFLOWER is the best TV movie ever and it is, for me, the best movie of PATRICIA ARQUETTE.

reply

Yep, great film. I think the film the original poster thought it was might have been "Rambling Rose" (1991) another good film set in the south!

I just love it , too. It was a great movie that captivated my heart.... the love between the main characters, it was so romantic.

I remember very well when this film came out in the mid-Nineties. It was first introduced on Lifetime, and they played it over and over (1994?). Patricia Arquette trained for her part in this file by immersing herself into deaf culture. She explained this in an interview, because she won Cable Television's Cable Ace Award for her incredible performance (yet she never mentions it). Billy McNamara was also nominated, but he didn't win.
The person who clearly stole the show, however, was a young 14 year-old Reese Witherspoon. Anyone who saw this movie over and over on Lifetime like I did, not only was awed by Patricia Arquette, but was simply blown away by Reese. As you can see, she had a natural way about acting, right from the start. This was Reese's 2nd film, having just completed Man In the Moon. And of course, today Reese Witherspoon has an Oscar :-)
One thing I found interesting: Reese's character in this film is Ellie, and in Legally Blonde, when she finally made her name in big lights, her character's name is Elle. I have always wondered if it was a nod from her to her role in this wonderful film, which, by the way, was Diane Keaton's directorial debut.

Oh, its the first time I watched Billy McNamara in something, and I fell in love with him (Those EYES!). Arquette was amazing, as was Witherspoon. I'd love to see this again! It's been years.

If you liked Reese Witherspoon in this movie, watch "The man in the moon"(same year-1991).Its a great "coming of age" movie and Reese is just as much a darling in it.

I've been trying to remember the name of this movie for AGES! Glad I found it finally! It's spectacular!
