Unrealistic ending? (spoilers)

I loved this movie and I thought Theresa Russell was outstanding. She proved herself to be an actress with the guts to take real risks and put herself on the line (Rebecca De Mornay or even Sharon Stone would have been good in this too).

I had mixed feelings about the ending. I was happy to see the pimp get what was coming to him and for Liz to find some ray of hope, but the point of this movie was that this is harsh reality and this is exactly how too many street whores end up. Why did her friend come to her rescue at the last minute anyway? What was in it for him, except a possible manslaughter or murder rap? These are the mean streets after all where everyone looks out for number one.

It would have been just as valid an ending if Liz died and finished narrating from beyond the grave, like in "Casino".

This movie was awful and the ending became predictable at the point where the homeless guy started sharpening that piece of glass.

The movie looked awful on the surface because it was done in a campy style and in broad strokes, but if you really pay attention to it, it has legs. It really has something to say and takes no prisoners.

I enjoyed the ending because it's really sort of sneaky—she walks away with happiness and a sense of worth because someone cared enough to do something nice for her, but how long is that going to last? And how messed-up is her life that it takes a brutal murder to get her feeling like this?

Having her die at the hands of her pimp would have been more logical, but I think it would have been less interesting and definitely less imaginative. I liked this one because it finds a happy ending without cheating, and because it's saying something by showing that yeah, this is about as happy as it's going to get for her in this situation.
