Awful???!!!!

I found this movie so profoundly unique and entertaining, that while watching it, I was glad to be alive! It did seem like you were peeping in somebodys bathroom thru the key hole, like something you shouldn't watch but could not help yourself. By todays standards, Whore would be pretty tame, but then I found it quite stimulating and will buy this once it becomes available on DVD for my collection of movies.

It's a strange little film, but then it's a Ken Russell film. You expect something different from a Ken Russell film. It's an odd mix of black comedy and documentary-style social realism combined with Theresa Russell talking direct to the camera much of the time, which added a stagey feel. But the mix worked. It was a bit stream-of-consciousness-ey at times. Theresa Russell was strange but great.

meh, it was trashy, but then so is the theme.

I thought it was very good! It was so odd!

It was sooo bad. The whole voice over narration thing mad me want to bash my head against a wall until I fell unconscious.

reply

It was simplistic , nothing more than what you watch today on most cable oriented programs late at night. Kama Sutra it wasn't!!!

I saw this one in the theatre's with a friend. I looked at the poster and thought, "Cool! Sociological study of what drives a woman to do this!" He thought, "Cool! Sex movie!"

I won.

I'd disagree. At first I was thinking "yeesh, this is forced," and I couldn't figure out why because I'd seen Theresa Russell do better than this. Then I realized the whole point is that this character is giving us a phony front full of affected mannerisms and speech patterns, because acting like that is a coping mechanism; she (the character) just isn't particularly convincing. You can see all of that sort of fade away when she's talking about something more personal, and she's totally different in the scenes showing her before she became a prostitute.

Wow, that is a VERY interesting and insightful perspective to her acting in this movie. :o That was cool to read. I very much enjoyed this movie myself.

i totally agree. I used to write reviews for a local paper and said something very similar about Russell and that was why I was a fan.
Your comment makes me think of Darwin...trying to talk to the monkeys.
I see this is an old comment but I am sure you have found this to be true of a lot of your observations.

I have rated almost 1600 movies and only given out a dozen "1's". This is one of them.

I loved this movie. And I think Theresa Russel was great. It's a very in -your -face movie.

i think in this case you might be wrong.

I enjoyed this movie , As I saw it as a comedy really. The whole tone of the movie was amusing to me. Saw it 10 years ago and still have not forgot the movie.

It's a great little movie, a funny one, and I like Theresa Russell a lot so that was a bonus. From reading the reviews I expected it to be something like a hack version of Panic in needle park. Turned out to be a genuinely good film. Ken Russell was an expert in visual storytelling so the material doesn't bog him down.

I couldn't decide whether Theresa's performance was good or bad!! I know she can act, but this was an entertaining though somewhat strange movie. I like it but not sure why. Ken Russell certainly was good at making audiences think, and dividing them at the same time.
