I thought he was TERRIBLE in this! Although I can't think of other movies I've seen him in to compare....all he did was walk around with his mouth open the whole time. I think the movie would've been better had a better actor been in the lead.

That's what he does in every movie.

Ethan Hawke was great. He acted through expression and dialogue, which is pretty much essential in a movie in which a human bonds with non-human animal(s).
