Why could they not hear the baby at the end of the film in the carriage?

I have not seen the movie, but I have read the book. Earlier in the story Gino comments that the worst cry from his baby is the one you can't hear.

I'd just like to confirm R-Mac is right. When Caroline was helping Gino wash the baby, the baby was crying [audibly]. Caroline was worried, but Gino said the only cry she should be worried about is when it's silent.
