Richard and Murray hating eachother in real life while making this?

What About Bob? (1991)—“Dr. Leo Marvin”

RD: How about it? Funny movie. Terribly unpleasant experience. We didn’t get along, me and Bill Murray. But I’ve got to give it to him: I don’t like him, but he makes me laugh even now. I’m also jealous that he’s a better golfer than I am. It’s a funny movie. No one ever comes up to you and says, “I identify with the patient.” They always say, “I have patients like that. I identify with your character.” No one ever says that they’re willing to identify with the other character.

Anymore info on why they hated eachother and maybe more in richard and murrays take on it? thanks

LoL, I just watched this last night and came here to read more about it! I saw in the "trivia" section that it said they did not get along, what's the deal??

How could anyone not get along with Bill Murray??

It's been agreed the whole world stinks, so no one's taking showers anymore.

reply

im trying to figure out what the deal was too lol ...all i can find is ..they didnt like eachother...not so much why and what happened on the set ...anyone have any info?

Murray went through a dark period in the early 90's. Apparently, he was having trouble in his marriage at this time and was in a bad mood. The divorce was finalized in January 1994. He also did not get along with Harold Ramis - his longtime friend - during Groundhog Day. They still don't speak to this day. He also was difficult during Mad Dog and Glory. Here's an article were Ramis talks about what happened between them:

thank you very good article ..doesnt speak that great about murray ...the murricane lol

reply

It doesn't seem that Murray is necessarily a bad person but apparently he does have mood swings and bouts with depression. Completely cutting Ramis off does seem harsh though but they supposedly will do Ghostbusters III so they must have made up.

reply

are they really going to do the third ghostbusters i thought that was all like wishful thinking ...if so do you know if they all will be back because that one guy quit acting after his wife died to raise his kids

reply

Ramis said everyone will be back for Part III except Rick Moranis who did retire from acting after his wife died. His kids are probably grown by now but he has no desire to come back. Here's an interview with Ramis

that interview link didnt come up when i clicked on it ..it was some site with a new design or something...is there any chance of him coming back for one movie ...i mean money talks ...and its not like it would be that big of a deal to make one more movie with a bunch of people he knows (i guess maybe if he didnt like them?)

reply

I guess it got taken down. Here's another recent one where Ramis says Moranis just has no interest in returning to acting regardless of money.

It actually would be a big deal if you think about. Making a major motion picture with hundreds of millions of dollars at stake with the whole world waiting for it is definitely a big deal. From what I've read of his interviews, he doesn't want to deal with that pressure anymore.

reply

I guess Moranis has morals i mean he could easily just come out for a nice paycheck and not give a crap if it fails...i mean what would be the worst that could happen? the movie flops and he doesnt get anymore jobs that he doesnt want anyways and he ends up not acting which he loves anyways lol
but it would be good to see him again

reply

It's hard to believe the movie could've been such a "terribly unpleasant experience" when the movie is so funny and lighthearted, and the two seemed to have great chemistry on the screen.

I guess Murray's a strange character. He doesn't seem to get along with people very often. He doesn't wanna do a Ghostbusters III, so I can't imagine it being any good either with him, or if his heart isn't in it.

reply

it was probably better for the film that they didnt get along.

reply

It’s entertaining — everybody knows somebody like that Bob guy. (Richard Dreyfuss and I) didn’t get along on the movie particularly, but it worked for the movie. I mean, I drove him nuts, and he encouraged me to drive him nuts.

This former A list mostly movie actor has multiple Oscar wins/nominations. He also has been one of the most difficult to work with actors of all time which is why he has trouble getting work. It is rich that he called out an actor/former co-star for being difficult to work with. It is true, but still, he should look in the mirror first. Richard Dreyfuss/Bill Murray ("What About Bob?") Very cool...

Personally, I liked this movie.

Bill Murray has a reputation for holding a grudge. If he likes you then he loves you. If he doesn't get along with you it's forever.

'What About Bob?' at 30: Richard Dreyfuss called Bill Murray an ashtray-throwing 'Irish drunken bully.' Now he's ready to forgive.
