Many people posting on this board appear to misunderstand why some of Bobs phobias and psychotic tendencies improve the closer he becomes with Dr Marvin's family.
Dr Marvin sees Bob once and knows he desperately desires any family connection. His own family history tells you enough about why that is and why seeing a photo of Dr Marvin's family, meeting them, and spending time with them makes him more comfortable.
