Dubbing

What was wrong with the sound in the beginning, the child's voice didnt seem natural at all. And when Peru talked English his mouth was not moving accordingly to what he spoke. Dubbed...?
Were these flawed moments the only dubbing or does Medem work as Fellini?
I got disturbed by these things, as well as adult Peru was played by the same man as the axe cut winner. Too bad for an otherwise good film.

because the movie originally is in basque

Hi,

sorry, I think you are wrong. The movement of the lips shows that they are talking in Spanish the whole time.
The 3 generations are played by the same actor at some point (1875,1905-1915,1936), I don't see anything wrong with that... fathers and sons can be pretty alike.

The characters are played by the same actors ´cause (specially in this film) Medem reinforces the cyclical sense of the life, the mistakes and weaknesses of the parents are suffered afterwards by the children. I can´t remember it very well but for example, the first chapter it´s called el aizkolari cobarde (sorry I don´t know how it´s called in english) ´cause the first character pretends to be dead to scape from the horror of the war and at the end of the film, we can see his grandson doing the same when emma suarez is laying in the forest , he pretends to be american (not a spanish speaker) to avoid his execution and save his life, leaving her alone. At the end, he is back to take care of her, she awakes in the same moment he arrives to her side (she thinks he has been all this time with her) , and he says something like I will always be with you... or something like that, and that´s not true. it´s the same with the relationships between the families along generations.
it ´s an example of the life in the little villages where the discussions or relations between families keep on being the same although the years go by.

No part of it definitely is dubbed, the lips do move in time (of what ive noticed) but part of it has that dubbed sound. Maybe medem didn't like some of the basque spanish accents?

It has that same sounding dubbed accents ive heard for english films dubbed in spanish.

very annoying though cos those type of accents don't seem 'real' if anyone understands me

The dubbing is because the whole film was shot cheaply without direct sound. Then, the voices were added in post-production. But Gomez doesn't speak English (neither did Medem then) so his words were dubbed by another actor. And not very well.

The dubbing really puts me off, at first I too thought my copy was dubbed in Spanish from Basque, but now...hmmm I'm not particularly keen on the cinematography either, even just 15 minutes in to the film Medem's progression between this and Lovers... seems immense.
