DVD release?

Is this movie is ever gonna be released on DVD? I can't find any info about it anywhere. I believe it is also discontinued on VHS. Being my favorite Hal Hartley movie, I find unacceptable. Sure it should be pretty easy to find a used copy, but I want it new.

Any ideas?

reply

i'd love to have this on dvd...replace the crappy taped version i taped off the tv late on night.

reply

Normally, I wouldn't get my hopes up if I were you, but lately I 've seen many older movies (and not only mainstream and blokbusters) being released on DVD, so I am not pesimistic anymore. I will be waiting patiently, untill the time comes to buy this movie.

Good news?!?!

I just read on http://www.cinemaeye.com/more/66_0_10_0_C/
that Trust will be released on September 16!!!! I hope they meant 2004,
and that the information turns out to be true!
I completely adore this movie...

reply

[deleted]

I totally agree, it's unacceptable that a movie like this is not yet on DVD. I would buy it in a second off Amazon if on DVD.

I hope when they finally do put it to DVD they include some VERY good special features like deleted scenes or out-takes or something from Trust to make up for it being so long stuck on VHS.

What is the industry's problem when a film such as this can't make it to DVD? A pathetic situation really. Trust is perhaps Hartley's best film and is a true classic, critically acclaimed the world over.

reply

[deleted]

Someone at Hartley's film company told me that this September 2005 it will be released on DVD in Australia... so I assume earlier for US, or maybe it's already released there?

reply

France and Australia will be the first territories to release Trust on DVD.

Rumors might have it that this film will be released under the Criterion Collection

really? where did you see this rumor? that would be really amazing.

Great News that this may be out in late 2005... It's long overdue... I have the Laserdisc version which is superb quality compared to VHS but it'll still be nice to get it on DVD.

reply

criterion would be awesome, i still have my old copy on vhs, i bought years ago, we need a DVD of this, one of my fave movies ever

I do. I prefer DVDs, VHS is outdated. I want the DVD with clearer picture, a chapter index, and maybe some special features like a director's commentary.

Hey everyone, I just got the region 4 trust dvd - great! I've watched the movie now, the cast interviews after, and even skipped instantly to rewatch some of my favorite scenes to admire Hartley's skillfull eye with composition - in the original aspect ratio!

reply

Awww . . . poor digital baby don't have a tape player no more. (Please excuse my intentional grammatical errors).

Go suck on your pacifier. It's gonna be all right. Tomorrow will be a new day.

Here's hoping all the movies you want to see that have never been released to DVD STAY UNRELEASED.

reply

[deleted]

That's ok. Since I have no interest in either movie myself I say:

Good for you.

Congratulations.

With that said there are still loads of Good, Bad or at least Interesting movies not on disc.

I'll list some so you don't think I'm just making up the previous statement:

TRACKDOWN (1976)
WINDOWS (1980)
DOUBLE MAN, The (1967)
VIGILANTE FORCE (1976)
STAND UP, VIRGIN SOLDIERS (1977)
*HICKEY AND BOGGS (1972)* It is true that an El Cheapo DVD of this title
was produced by A.I.P. Films Canada -- looks like they transferred the movie from the PAL tape released in England. And the PAL tape looks much better, I might add.

LOCK UP YOUR DAUGHTERS! (1969-British)
OTLEY (1968-British)
BABY LOVE (1969-British)
AGE OF CONSENT (1969-Australian)
GREENGAGE SUMMER, The (1961-British)

GAMES, The (1970)
HARD CONTRACT (1969)

COVER ME BABE (1970)
CITY GIRL (1984)

WHITE DOG (1982)
I ESCAPED FROM DEVIL'S ISLAND (1973)
VAMPIRA (1974) (aka: "Old Dracula")

EARTH 2 (1971-U.S. tvm) MGM/UK Video
FALSE WITNESS (1970) MGM/UK Video (U.S. title is "Zigzag")
FLARE-UP (1969) MGM (released in U.S. and UK on video)
GUNS FOR SAN SEBASTIAN (1968) MGM/UK Video
HEAVEN WITH A GUN (1969) MGM/UK Video
HIT MAN, The (1972) MGM/UK Video
NO BLADE OF GRASS (1970) MGM/UK Video

SLAMS, The (1973) MGM/UK Video
SWEET REVENGE (1976) MGM/UK Video
TRAVELING EXECUTIONER, The (1970) MGM/UK Video
WHY WOULD I LIE? (1980) MGM/UK Video

WOMAN CHASER, The (1999) Patrick Warburton.

DEEP END (1970) Jane Asher, John Moulder-Brown.

I reckon that's enough for now. For the record I do have most of the movies I just listed.

I am sure some of these titles would make some money if they were to be released on DVD. Lord Knows there's plenty of other movies that aren't well known to have been released by some DVD company or other.

The reason I'd love to see the superb Trust on DVD is that it's the only way you can get it on Netflix. I'd love to recommend it to friends on Netflix, and also give it five stars on the site.

reply

[deleted]

yes, Netflix only rents dvds, because VHS is an antiquated format. You're obviously completely unbiased and objective with your flailing defense of this outdated technology, so why did you feel the need to throw in the fact that you have a ridiculously large VHS collection? And, you can rant all you want about how VHS doesn't sound or look worse than dvd, and everyone's going to laugh at you, because you're obviously wrong. I don't know what this freezing up problem you're describing is all about, but I've never encountered it. I've tried to pull out some old vhs tapes, and guess what? They've deteriorated, and the film has gotten grainy, and on some the sound pops... Now, I know that for you, this isn't a problem, because you've got a special oxygen-deprived, cryogenically sealed storage facility in which you safely keep and preserve your 3,000 video tapes, but for the rest of us who aren't obsessed with defending a dead technology, we'll be ok with the dvd. When Trust does come out in America on DVD, it will look and sound better than your video tape copy.

reply

Dear Jinsaiband: Not everyone's going to laugh at me. Especially if they see the picture quality I get to watch. Other collectors I know with good equipment don't. I'll bet my tapes will outlast your ridiculously cheap DVD's. You're probably one of those idiots who thinks DVD's will last you 100 years or some such garbage. You deserve to have all the DVD's you want. Buy them up by the truckload from the bargain bin at Wal-Mart. Buy them from Bubba at the local flea market. Buy them from wherever the notion strikes ya.

Also -- you are the most ignorant person I've ever run across on the IMDb. CONGRATULATIONS Jinsai-maggot!

Do you really think that every movie ever released on VHS will be released on a DVD? How come I have tapes that were made 25+ years ago that still work fine? Does your peon brain have a good answer for that? Sure I list that I have a large amount of tapes to illustrate how little problem I have with them. I think it's a valid point. If you don't -- then so be it.

I'll bet you are one of those people who would get rid of a movie you like if you have it on tape just because it's not on a DVD. I've known morons like you -- you whine about how come all movies aren't on DVD and that you have to do without. PERHAPS SOMEDAY YOU CAN HAVE ALL THE SPECIAL FEATURES FOR ALL THE CRAPPY NEW MOVIES YOU OWN STUFFED UP YOU LIKE AN ENEMA.

Have a nice day. :) -CG

Hey there spaz!

Well, it's true that not everyone is going to laugh at you, but I think it's safe to say that nobody's laughing with you. Some people feel sorry for you... and I'm sure some people think you're a little scary. I just think you're funny.

Look, I know all your movies look and sound better than the real thing, and they probably talk to you too... While you're stroking them and making sweet love to your 10,000 dollar vcr, most other people just want a movie to look good when they watch it. People enjoy being able to skip around between chapters, and special features don't hurt. I personally enjoy being able to turn subtitles on or off, select widescreen format, and choose which language I'd like to hear.

I don't get rid of a tape if it's not on dvd, and I'm not even sure what you're talking about. You see, most people aren't crazy enough to care as much as you do about this. I'll keep the VHS copy if it's the only version available, and then when the dvd comes out I'll throw the VHS out. Most of my favorite movies are out on DVD. I can only think of a handful that aren't... Among them there's Trust, and a few others, but thankfully those are being released in their Mystery Science Theater 3000 versions, and that's good enough for me.

I don't have a disturbing obsession with obscure James Coburn movies, but I'm sure if I did, I'd like those movies to come out on dvd, while I pulled my hair out in envy of your collection. Luckily, I don't care.

You should really take this crusade of yours to the next level man. It's time to go out into public and start protesting dvds on street corners. You could throw reels of film at passing cars while you smash dvds with VCRs. Most people are indifferent, and didn't completely lose their minds when their collection of VHS tapes became outdated technology... it's time for you to show some VHS Pride, and inform people that they should be angry about new film technologies!

Fight on brother!!!

reply

[deleted]

That's the spirit! Now, don't stop with just making the stickers!!! It's time to take this to the streets! Start slapping them on public signs and posts, naked whilst you do so, so you can show off your James Coburn tattoos. Smack people in the head with your VCRs, and remind them that "The dvd freeze is nigh!" Maybe you could have your friends... oh wait... ummm... maybe you could figure out a way to tie yourself with reels of tape to a giant crucifix made from melted down dvds... then people would really take you seriously.

And don't listen to people when they say "wow, calm down there buddy... I really just don't care..."
That's when you've got to grab your bullhorn and scream in their face "NOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!! NOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!! NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!"

It's ridiculous that Trust is not available on DVD....
I've been waiting years to get a copy of Trust other than my crappy, worn-out VHS (with the preview of "BeastMaster" before the main feature).

Why is it that virtually every Hal Hartley film is available on DVD, except his best one? I ask you?!?

reply

Just saw Trust for the first time at my moms house. I LOVE IT !! Great movie.
But seriously, is there STILL no US Region DVD release ? I can't believe that.
Actually I fail to 100% believe that.

Can anyone PLEASE give me a 100% for sure answer of where or if I can get Trust on DVD for a US release ?

I want to buy this movie for me and her, but we refuse to watch movies on VHS anymore, much less purchase them on VHS. Its a waste. OMG !! To think some people actually still find it normal to have to REWIND and FAST FOWARD a movie or song !!! That is literally hilarious - lol - PLUS VHS don't work too good on my 1920x1080i true pro HD resolution LCD... With HDMI connections. Along with the extreme DTS Sound.

SO please help ,,

Thanks so much guys,,

Joel

Dear warren85: Greetings, douche bag. Oh, wait, I'm sorry. Greeting O Ignorant Twat. There. That's better. With all due respect (and with the words spelled in the Olde English style) . . .

Pisse Offe.

I'm sorry but VHS is not completely outdated. Completely outdated things are 8-Track tapes. Take your DVD's and shove 'em. Besides that -- what would Your Stupidness recommend I do with all the tapes I purchased years ago (before the advent and eventual takeover of the marketplace by DVD's) that are still working? Perhaps you need a rectangular suppository to help you through the day . . . I do have a few spare tapes sitting around waiting for a good home. Interested, as*hole?

You're just another typical dummy on the IMDb thinking a DVD release of a movie is ALWAYS the mother of all homevideo releases of that title. So what else is new? "DVD?" "DVD release?" Ha Ha Ha. You're a cliche just like all the other morons. And you obviously can't read and comprehend at the same time for I don't recall ever saying all VHS tapes have better picture quality than all DVD's.

I admit to having no use for HD-DVD and Blu-Ray at the present time. I've got enough other movies to watch.

QUOTE: " . . . those that have no chance of being released to DVD obviously aren't good enough and have no market".

Gawd Almighty are you dumb. Just what in hell do you know about what constitutes a "good movie"? What are you -- some dopey teenage yahoo with one finger on your computer and the other stuck firmly up your arse?

Ok, Techno-twat. You win. Have all the DVD's you want. Bathe in the coating. Me and my lowly tapes will now crawl away in disgrace . . .

YO HO HO. MERRY CHRISTMAS.

NEWS AND NOTES: I really would expect TRUST to be released on a Region 1 DVD at some point but the tape isn't bad. How clear does a picture on a character-driven movie like that have to be to enjoy it anyway? It's clear enough. I've seen the movie 4 times and don't feel cheated. I rented it many moons ago from a Blockbuster then I later bought the same videocassette (they only had 1 copy of it) when they sold it on the PVT rack for $4.99. I still have it to this day and have never had a problem. I last viewed it about 6 months ago so I have watched it recently.

I'll give you credit -- at least you had the decency to give me a reply to my "same old question" or whatnot. No one else has. I don't expect nor would I want anyone to give up their DVD's. That's why it's a free country. I'm just not willing to let all the disc junkies badmouth tapes when I've got thousands that are still playing just fine and I didn't have to do anything special to take care of them. Sure the odd tape goes bad sometimes but all DVD's are not perfect either.

For the record the PANASONIC AG-W1 INDUSTRIAL WORLDWIDE VCR cost me $500, not thousands. Perhaps when this unit was new it would have run a few thousand, but I bought it used and so far so good. I considered it to be a decent investment with all those tapes I had already and now I can play PALs here in the USA. PALs are fun.

The VCR utilizes about 90% of the signal from the magnetic tape to produce a nice picture on the Sony Triniton TV set. I really can't complain. The picture is neither murky, blurry or fuzzy. I'd reckon a regular consumer VCR would utilize only about 40%-50% of the signal from the videocassette so the picture naturally wouldn't look as good.

I only defend my videos because they're still working well for me. If they all broke at once well then I'd defend them no more. But they're still playing right along as we near 2007.

I do have about 40 DVD's. I bought them grudgingly -- but I still bought them. Mostly movies not on tape.

I concede that releasing seasons of television programs to the homevideo market is better suited to the DVD format than the videocassette format. I won't try to deny it since you can store more information on discs.

"Well if your VHS work for you then more power to you. I can relate to you somewhat as I see lots of people on msg boards already ditching DVD for HD-DVD but myself I am not quite ready... not even close."
----------------------------------------

Regular DVD is backwards compatible with Blu-Ray and HD-DVD, as I'm sure you know. The onset of the age of HD-DVD is of no consequence to those who do not wish to blow thousands of dollars upgrading their collections. The same cannot be said for VHS adherents. I have to agree with the PAL guy in the sense that I don't consider DVD quality so superior as to truly enhance my enjoyment of a movie. However, I prefer DVD because it affords me the opportunity to illegally download movies and burn them for the mere cost of a blank (40 cents for good media), and I can rip and burn my favorite films for friends. This is an excellent way to give ultra cheap birthday and holiday presents, whose cheapness does not outweigh the quality and utility of the gift.

reply

VHS vs. DVD is not akin to Records vs. CDs where there is a cut and dried advantage to records, bigger artwork, better liner notes, and analog sound closer to the artist's intent. VHS movies are far away from the artist's intent, hacked up panned and scanned films with (in the case of every single foreign film, and i can particularly tell on Spanish films) poor subtitles, and of course, the awful sound that tapes had. Say what you want about how tapes preserved film grain better (and by the way, good DVD transfers by companies like Criterion Collection and New Yorker video DO preserve film grain correctly) you can't ignore the fact that tapes of movies before the 1990s had tons of pops and hisses and sounded horrible for anything but dialog. Anybody who has good video equipment should be able to get much, much more out of widescreen DVDs which are closer to the theatrical intent of the picture with surround sound than out of crappy old tapes. I was grouchy about throwing out my tapes at first too and I had a ton of them, but when I tried to watch them again compared to DVD and even laserdisc versions of the same film I found no reason to worry about keeping them. HD-DVD/Blu Ray vs. DVD is not the same cut and dried issue, some people will never upgrade and a lot of people won't upgrade for 5 to 10 years. There is a format where only a marginal improvement has been made, but VHS vs. DVD is practically a revolution. Plus VHS wasn't even the best format of its time, BetaMax had superior picture quality for tapes but lost out on the battle to get a 2 hour recordable format out; laserdiscs came out in the early 70s and were always better but were too overpriced for all but the nuttiest movie aficionados. Most people's tapes do still work, but tapes are outdated junk that ought to be thrown away or recycled for their plastic content.
