Ending?

How did this movie end? I stopped watching it at the part where Peg (Maria's sister)is laying in bed with Matthew (he's drunk and has no clothes on)and Maria sees. What happens at the end? Do they get married?

****Spoilers, obviously*****

They don't get married. Maria decides to get an abortion. Matthew has a meltdown at work and pulls the pin out of an old hand grenade. Maria and her family arrive at the scene and she convinces him to put the hand grenade away and he tosses it & they duck for cover. When it doesn't go off right away they get up. Then it goes off, but they aren't permanently injured. The end (more or less).

Its been about 10 years since I saw it so I might not have all the scenes in the correct order but that's the gist of it.

****More Spoilers*****

I just saw this today, and here is some further info:

After the grenade goes off, the police come and arrest Matthew.

As the police car drives off, Matthew has his head outside the rear seat window and stares at Maria, while Maria stares back at him as he is driven off.

Music plays throughout the scene; there is no spoken dialogue.

The End.

I think the movie suggests that they'll have at least a friendship after all, and I like to think that they'll get together.

What I got from the ending is this: Maria's mother was right after all, Matthew was too unstable and not a good match for her younger daughter. We had come to hate the mother for trying to separate the two lovers, but the last scene with the grenade makes it clear that the mother was right.

By having the abortion, Maria cut her links with both the jock who got her pregnant, and with Matthew (who had discovered his paternal/protective instinct and wanted to marry her). She has matured, grown up, and now is ready to build a better life for herself.

+++MORE SPOILERS+++

Maria takes the grenade from Matthew and she tosses the grenade away.

The grenade does not go off...

The camera cuts to the grenade...

Time elapses...

Maria and Matthew think the grenade may be a dud after all...

The audience "knows" better...

After a long pause...POW...the grenade goes off....

Peg and her mom (forgot name) faint....

The grenade does remarkably little damage....

Matthew and Maria both escape injury...

He is arrested and taken away...

She puts on her glasses and looks on as he is driven away in a police car....

He'll probably get sentenced to 15 to life for setting off a "terrorist" device...

They get married while he is in prison...

He'll do maybe 10 years....

They live happily ever after....

(THE LAST 4 POINTS ARE ENTIRELY PART OF MY IMAGINATION AND ARE THUS COPYRIGHTED)

BTW...The actress that played Maria was 24 when she made teh movie, the actor who played Matthew was 33. Not that it matters.

I would guess they would end up together, i'm sure with writing and visiting him he would manage to hold on to her for a few years. I would say he gets at least five years.
