How did you discover this amazing film?

Just like the subject says, I am very interested in how every has discovered Truly Madly Deeply.

My story isn't fabulous, but makes it a real true surpise. I was on an Alan Rickman binge, after seeing him in Sense and Sensibility and completely falling for him I wanted more. Popped on to IMDB and made a list of his flims and then went round to the video store. I got TMD and Robin Hood. Needless to say, I found TMD to be the vastly superior flim :). It was quite a surprise, as I had never ever heard of it before, and since then I have been hooked :)

I found this movie while going through the Online Film Critic Society's Top 100 Overlooked Films of the 1990's located at www.listsofbests.com. Check out the site, it's completely addictive.
The movie is one of my favorites on the list so far, they ranked it at 21 and I would move it up in the top ten. I've seen 84 of the movies so far and would recommend a few others on the list:

Lone Star
The Straight Story
Bringing out the Dead
Croupier
Smoke
The Secret of Roan Inish

I found this film about 9 months or so ago.

I've been at the boards for about a year now and was looking into Alan's films, like most others. I printed the list, like everyone else, and went on my trek to find them. Not being a Juliet Stevenson fan, I just could not watch it. I bought TMD along with Dark Harbor, January Man, and a few others for $3.00 each at a used video store. Didn't watch them. Just wanted to own them. Then, about 4 months ago, I was home sick and flipping through the channels. Truly, Madly, Deeply was on. I'd missed the first 15 minutes but watched the rest.

OH MY GRACIOUS!!! What an amazing film! And now, I love Juliet and will never avoid a movie because of an actor/actress!! The performances were so perfect! Just amazing.

Anyway... that's my little story.

Mine stumbling on this movie was not much different from everyone else's. About ten years ago I was feeling a little blah, and down, so i decided to rent a comedy. I was riffling through the comedy section when I stumbled across this movie. I had never seen Alan Rickman do a comedy before and was quite intrigued. I popped this in and cried for the duration of the movie, but I was in love both with the movie and Alan. I had always found him sexy but this definitely shown him in a new light. I went out a purchased it immediately on VHS and then about 4 years ago I stumbled across the dvd version and just had to buy it. This is the movie that I make all my friends watch whether they are fans of Alan's or not.

If life were only moments, then you'd never know you had one.

How could anybody NOT like Juliet Stevenson?????

This is one of my desert island films. Definitely. Alan Rickman is wonderful and Michael Maloney is adorable.

I was brought to this film because of my enjoyment Juliet Stevenson's acting (from the first time I saw her as Rosalind Franklin in "Life Story" I've tried to see anything that she is in) and, like most, was taken right to the heart of grief by her scene at the therapists.
The wonderful performances by Alan Rickman, Michael Maloney, Bill Paterson etc, etc were just icing on the cake.
I would also like to recommend to any readers of this thread that you listen to the commentary by Anthony M., the director, on the dvd.

I was reading a magazine and one of my favorite movie-critics made a list with his personal favorite movies of all times. I knew (and loved) all of the movies that were on his list, except for TMD. So when I was in London I happen to saw the dvd in a store and thought what the heck and just bought it.

And I loved the movie (still do).

I saw it in the theatre during its' initial release. That was a good year for movies.

I have always been a huge fan of Alan Rickman. After seeing him in Sense and Sensibility, I began to search for all of the movies of his that I had not yet seen. When I came across this one, I just knew I had to see it. I had just seen Bend It Like Beckham and am now a huge Juliet Stevenson fan as well. This movie was heaven for me!! I can't believe that I haven't heard more about it or seen it on TV more.

I am always on a "Alan binge" and so I looked in every video store in the three towns by me to find all of the movies I could. Rasputin, Michael Collins, Robin hood: Prince of Theives, Quigly Down Under (you get the picture)... I already owned Sense and Sensibility, Love Actually, Galaxy Quest (I got it for $2, how could I resist?), and several others. However, the one I really wanted to see (since I also love Juliet Stevenson)was TMD, but I COULD NOT find it anywhere. Then, one day I was at HMV and there it was on DVD! Well, needless to say I snatched it up like it was my own lost child (even though it was a lot more $ then what I normally spend on movies) and I have loved it ever since.

I first found this while channel surfing. I came across it in the beginning of the explanation about the friends. It so intrigued me I watched it to the end. But how to see the whole thing? Thank the Lord for my DVR with it in the guide setting you can switch to by title from by time. It will show when the highlighted film in the time setting plays again in the next few days so you can record it.

I was about 7 years old when I saw Robin Hood and got the creeps from Alan's preformance (ok, no nightmares or anything and I wasn't scared but more...facinated I think) and when I was 15 my mother told me there was going to be a movie on tv which was called Truly Madly Deeply and I fell in love by just hearing the title of the movie and then she told me Alan Rickman was in it, so I taped it and now, 3 years later I stil have it on the same tape, untill I find it on DVD. still one of my all time favorite movies =D

i was just minding my own business on the sofa one night, reading a book, when all the sudden, I was interrupted by a scream. I looked up to see my mother, her hand on the remote, her eyes glued to the television screen.
"You have to watch this movie!" she exclaimed putting it on. I discovered it was Truly, Madly, Deeply, and it had Alan Rickman from reading the info. "Heck yes!" I thought. "I love Alan Rickman!" and the rest is history. I don't think I've cried so hard since I saw Moulin Rouge!

All I need... is an after-dinner Grint.

Me too! Bless the PBS. It is now one of my favorite films as well.

This is my favorite film of all time. In 1993, my girlfriend called me at
midnight and told me that she and her daughters had just watched an amazing movie. Of course, my husbaand and I went out the next day to rent it.
I loved it more than she did. It represented God's love for us, our love for each other, and the lengths to which love will go to ease one's pain.
He loved her so much, that he sacrificed their memories so she could go on with her life. To what lengths will God go to ensure our happiness?
At the end of this film, when they wave from the window, a love for my husband welled up in me I have never known. Love is indefinable, yet Anthony Minghella comes as close as I've ever seen to defining true, unconditional love.

It was on one of the STARZ channels and I caught the end of it and loved it so I found when it would be on and watched it completely. I'm a cellist, so I was intrigued by the description, but fell in love with the movie.

An honest portrayal of grief too - no boo-hooing or dabbing at the eyes, but pure, unadulterated sobbing by Nina at her counselor's appointment.

Amazing dialogue and wonderful characters. Loved every minute of it.

P.S. If you want a good Rickman movie, try to find Closetland. It's a great flick.

My mum always raved about it. But you never listen to your mum, do you!

Loved him in Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves, loved him in Die Hard, loved him in Dogma. Always watch 'girlie' movies when BF is out, so decided to hire it tonight. Now decided to buy it.

I now realise that it's not a 'girlie' movie.

I saw it on TV once, but wasn't really following it, then I remembered its name and constantly watched its trailer, then I bought the video. I love this movie, its well acted and just simply amazing.

I tried to see it in the theatre (read a great review), then promptly rented it (and just as promptly, ran out and bought a copy for myself).

I just love this movie. If I had to name a personal favorite, although I have thousands in my "top 100 list" this movie would be it. Minghella just wrote something delicate and funny, human, compassionate, and that just exudes not only a love for people in all their differences, but that also just as wonderfully exudes a love of music and of literature. The script is whimsical and lighter than air and yet about some incredibly big, deep stuff.

On bad days every once in awhile, I just put this movie in to get a little perspective. It's the only movie I've seen so many times I can actually recite it. Or I could. But I won't. ;-)
