Jamie returns for a reason

Spoilers here. After loving this film for decades, I finally looked at what everyone has been saying about it on IMDB. I didn't go over every entry, certainly, but it appears that many viewers didn't quite catch that Jamie returns with the specific intention of helping Nina to move on. Much written about how she remembers how neither their love nor Jamie were perfect, after they've been reunited for a time, but no discussion about how he orchestrates the entire thing. After allowing both Nina and himself the joy of their first reunion, he slowly ramps up the annoyances, ultimately with the help of his dead mates. Then toward the end, after she leaves in a huff, the other ghosts look at him inquiringly, silently asking him if his efforts might have proven successful, that she may be ready to move on, and he replies "I think so." It's their congratulatory pat on Jamie's back through the window (well done lad) that makes me burst into tears every time. I wonder if it's really clear to everyone how much Jamie does to push her gently into moving on. I imagine it is, but someone reassure me please?

Of course I can't speak for anyone else, but it's clear as a bell to me that he came back for the specific purpose of helping her move on with her life. It always has been.

It's hard to see through the tears, but I did see that. 

it never occured to me that it wasn't clear. i can't say i thought much of her new man though.

I agree with the OP. Would add that he returns to support her in her grief too. That helps a person move on.

I agree with you, OP.

Jamie comes back to help her move on.

I like to think though that he purposely ramped up his bad and annoying habits in order to move things along.

I also like to think this was in direct proportion to the way he was idealized in Nina's mind after he was gone.

In the end, like most people, I'm sure he was in the middle somewhere.

I agree with you OP. It wasn't clear to me while he was annoying Nina that he was doing it to help her move on but it was clear by the end. When the ghost friends pat Jaime on the back and they show his face I just went to pieces. He smiles forlornly, happy that she's moved on but sad to see it end. Truly an act of love. I definitely appreciated this film.
