Ended Charles Lane's directing career apparently

Having recently watched Sidewalk Stories on TCM I was quick to look into what became of the talented director behind it and realized he signed a deal with Disney and followed up his debut with this film. I remember when this was released and it not doing very good. I never really had any interest in it back then. I'd seen the great Eddie Murphy SNL sketch it was based on. Now having see Sidewalk Stories I'm curious to see this. It's failure apparently killed Lane's directing career. Which is too bad. He was a talented dude. Even if this film is not very good Hollywood is too quick to toss aside talent when one film flops. It's a shame. Would've been interesting to see what he would've done if he'd been given another chance.
