Wil Wheaton - one of the lead actors?

I'm visiting my parents, who don't have cable premium channels, and this was on - I hate watching channels with commercials and no dvr to fast forward.

Anyway, this cable company has listed as the lead actors: Luis Gossett, jr. & Wil Wheaton. Really? Wil Wheaton? He was a geeky sidekick, that dies halfway. He's known for playing the geeky, scrawny, dorky son (Wesley Crusher) of Doctor Crusher on Star Trek, The Next Generation.

The main characters are Sean Astin son of Patty Duke & Luis Gossett, jr.

Um, yes. Wil Weaton is one of the leads. He was better known as the lead from Stand by Me and voiced a charactor in the Secret of Nihm prior to being on Star Trek TNG. It wasn't likd he wasn't already a well established actor.

I take it the OP is very young and only knows him from Big Bang Theory.

Sean Astin was definitely THE lead. But Wil Wheaton was also one the main characters. Dying does not mean he cannot be one of the leads.
Ironically in the book, his character is really a very minor part of the story and is only mentioned for about three pages with one contribution.

Wow, I didn't know this came from a book. I loved this film when I was a kid. Might have to give that a read.

Toy Soldiers by William P. Kennedy
The book is a bit different. Without giving anything away, the criminals are terrorists in the book and Billy Tepper's background story is different & expanded.
