Bleak, yet beautiful...

As part of my French Culture course in college, we had to do three French film reviews. I selected this and am thankful I did. Although bleak and somber, the talents of the French actors blew me away in this film. I did not consider it a love story as much as I did a statement on selfishness and pride. But as a musician, I found it hard not to be inspired by the score and portrait of a musician's life in a royal court. In general, I appreciate the European tendencies to minimalize the actual background music and let the dialogue and scenery speak for itself. This movie did not disappoint and I think if there were an English equivilant, it would have captured a large audience. It may not be the epic biopic that "Amadeus" was, but it's definitely up there with the best.
