The love affair between the young Marin and Madeleine

Was anyone bothered by this? It didn't seem right. She pursued him and he ended up leaving her. The last love scene might be perceived as vulgar. He was not so much making love to her as indulging in a habit. She chose to be with him. She did not have to be. When she went to play in public with her father and her sister, the men in the audience looked at her with desire. It is such a tragic story. It does not even deserve to be called a love story. He did not love her. Perhaps he used her as a way to get close to her father. She committed suicide because Marin abandoned her. This is very disturbing.

It 's certainly not a love story. Marin uses her then betrayed her, she seduced him hoping he would fall in love with her, by doing so she betrayed her father so she said " I hated myself also "(when Marin asked if she hated him) so the suicide is the clear decision since she will die anyway.)

I am just a regular person but not a clone.

I completely agree with both of you! I rented this movie after hearing the rave reviews on the music and the "romantic" aspect of the film. There was absolutely no romance! Madeline loved Marin but he didn't love her. He used her for her skills and she killed herself because she was in a deep depression over the disparity in her life. The loss of her baby and Marin leaving her. This movie is sad!

"Sure... fine... whatever."

Well, you see, the love story is that of monsieur de Sainte Colombe and his wife. I do realize that you missed the true center of the film (and novel) wich is that the purpose of Music is to retain the dead.

Well said! That was the point, and also why we see the main character look like such a charade of himself by the end. He is a very damaged person.

Or not indulging in a habit. My interpretation of the dialog is that he couldn't get it up, and blamed it on "my body is tired of you".

Marin Marais is shown as a complex character, but he certainly was never in love with Madeleine. He may have been in love with music. He was in love with his place as a court musician. He enjoyed the court life as much as Sainte Colombe detested it.

In the modern world, Madeleine would be seen as chronically depressed and given help. In her case it would probably be psychotherapy, with antidepressant drugs if that failed. Those who despise modern treatments can look at this as the alternative.

Wow, thanks for that analysis. It seems right on the mark!
