The short that inspired the feature

You might want to check out Van Dormael's short film "E Pericoloso Sporgersi" (Sticking Your Head Out is Dangerous - a sign that used to be found in Italian trains). This 14-min film from 1984 contains a lot of themes (and some of the scenes from "Toto"). I found it ona double DVD from the Clermont Ferrand festival.
