Did he cut himself?

I haven't seen this movie for a long time but I remember one scene where Thomas (as a child) is being chased by Alfred through the woods with a knife. Thomas hides in some leaves and Alfred can't find him so he throws the knife down in disgust. Yet when he gets home, Thomas has a huge bloody slash across his face. How did this happen? Did he do it to himself?

I think what happened is that the knife Alfred threw away caught Thomas on the face as he hid in the water.

If he'd done it to himself to make his sister think Alfred had attacked him, then wouldn't he have said something like, "Look what Alfred did to me!" when he got home?
