'Ted and Venus' to be released on DVD on March 1, 2005

I had seen what looked like a DVD cover of "Ted and Venus" a couple of weeks ago in an eBay auction. I didn't believe that it was legitimate, as I didn't see any news of it being put out in DVD. Well, just a few minutes ago, I did a Google and MSN search, and it turns out that some company called Pro-Active Entertainment is releasing it on March 1, 2005. The price is around $4.99, which is kind of paltry, if you ask me, considering "Beware! the Blob" and "Hysterical," both admittedly bad films in Bud's oeuvre, is for sale at $9.99 each.

I am trying to find an address for this company, and I cannot find a bloody thing! I can only imagine, or fear, truthfully, that they'll put out a chintzy product, minus a hoped-for interview with Bud about this, his film directorial debut. Strangely, the DVD is listed as a title under only Woody Harrelson's name--no other cast members are mentioned.

Amazon.com and a few other such websites, can have "Ted and Venus" available on pre-order.

Your sarcasm aside, "Ted and Venus" is a fascinating study of the psyche of a socially-impaired, and yes, perverted, person who couldn't take "no" for an answer. It was based on a true story published in the Los Angeles Times in the 1980s, and in the true story, the out come of it was that the stalker/poet got the mental help he sorely needed and the social worker moved away and changed her name.

As I recall reading about it, Bud Cort saw it as a challenging, although not pleasant story, which needed to be told. It was made as a warning to let the audience know that under no circumstances, should one person over step the boundaries regarding someone's personal freedom and sense of security. If such a person persists, then he or she runs the risk of losing not only their liberty by getting arrested, procecuted and incarcerated, but they could pay the ultimate price by losing their lives for it!

This is not the only film that gave audiences a look at a sick individual. Two examples are "Psycho" and "Dead Ringers," both being based on true stories of truly sick individuals. Although you might say that "Ted and Venus" is not on par with the quality of those two films, still, do we discredit Alfred Hitchcock, David Cronenberg, and Bud Cort for wanting to make these films, and even so the people who enjoy watching them?

I'd like to see this. The trailer appears on my VHS of Past Midnight.

Are you kidding, Tiwannae?

I know you love Bud Cort (you head up his fansite, I believe?) but this movie...egad... I saw it as Bud's desperate, pathetic attempt to recapture his glory days of Harold and Maude. He needs the discipline of a good director because, if not, he shrieks and carries on in the most rediculous of ways. His sense of humour is vulgar and juvenile and his characters are shallow and revolting. He lacks any solid talent.

This movie has turned me off the man in a big way.

deerintheglen,

Yes, I am the (unofficial) Bud Cort fan site moderator.

I stand by what I feel for (and wrote) about "Ted and Venus". It was never intended to be a "pretty" story, given that it was based on a true story. It is about the sexual harrassment of a social worker by a mentally unstable man. I think Bud Cort's performance justifies the unstableness of 'Ted Whitley'. He lived in a world all his own, as you can tell from the sex-crazed poetry the character wrote. He was creepy and made me feel uncomfortable in some scenes--just as one should feel if one had to deal with a person like that character.

It is an independent film, and being on a limited budget, Bud Cort had to do the best with what he was given. He had a very hard time making this film. I try to see more about a film than how well it is shot, so I do not fault the film on any shortcomings therein. For all that it may matter, I have seen worse-shot, acted, edited and directed, films in my time.

I am sorry that you let this role turn you off from Bud Cort "in a big way". It is truly unfair an assessment of his talents, as you, and many other people I have come across, either haven't heard of him, or haven't seen much of his work outside of "Harold and Maude". He is a highly-underrated actor, and you can only know this if you were to see him in such films as, "The Traveling Executioner," "Why Shoot the Teacher," "Maria's Lovers," and even (voice-only) in "Electric Dreams," and in smaller roles in "Pollock," "The Big Empty" and "The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou". You cannot "lose" talent...it only SEEMS diminished if one is not given better roles to work with.

Bud Cort is not alone...there are hundreds of "top" or "iconic" actors who have done roles that were not the best...but as actors who have to make a living as it is all that they know (and love) to do, they make the most of what they are given.

It was nice that he dedicated it to Ruth Gordon, et. al from "Harold and Maude". I see it as his thanking them for helping him get that far in his career to have been given an opportunity to direct, as well as act.

Yes I see your point. I should have another look at the movie and remind myself that this is the same man who was wonderful in H&M, Why Shoot the Teacher, MASH, etc. It just seemed to me that he was trying to be funny, type-casting himself in the process. Or maybe not: maybe his portrayal is exactly what he planned it to be.

"Ted and Venus" is based on a true story. Do you know where I can read about the true story?

Regarding the basis for the plot, Paul Ciotti, who wrote the screenplay with Bud Cort, was the author of the article the film was based on. I think it was an LA Times piece or LA Weekly piece from the late 1980s or early 1990s. Try looking up Mr. Ciotti's name to see if you can find it.
