Waymon Tisdale?

It is an unusual coincidence, especially because the screenwriter for this film is Nelson George, whose career is in the music industry more than films. But when he wrote the movie and it was made, Waymon was known as a basketball star -his professional music career had not begun yet, so apparently Nelson knew of him from that sports fame, not music. Just a mysterious homage or possibly a true coincidence!

Actually it was Waymon Tinsdale in the movie, but yeah strikingly similar to University of Oklahoma star Wayman Tisdale.

Saw Tisdale play for the Sac Kings, and also on a Jazz Cruise mere months before he passed way too young at 44...he was one talented and eclectic cat.
