Ignorance

The plot summary describes Waymon as being a "white" African-American. When Waymon was in Harlem, Bobby told him to get out before he gets hurt. When educated African-Americans achieve financial success and have good communication skills, they are considered "sell-outs" or "acting white." They are somehow not "black enough" because they no longer fit a specific stereotype. Apparently, the black community has a strict standard on how someone should dress, talk, and behave. If these guidelines aren't followed, ridicule and discrimination follows. Unfortunately, this type of negative characterization continues to hurt the black community. We all suffer the consequences.
