Spoiler! how the ending could have been avoided

Did anyone else think that maybe if the dad didn't break the family's dishes every week, then the son wouldn't have had to rob the drug dealer or whatever got him killed... ?They could have saved a lot of money that way. Side note-doesn't everyone think the dad is the funniest thing in a movie ever?

It was unfortunate that Dennis resorted to robbing a drug dealer. However, his father was becoming downright abusive to him and his mother; it was caused both by frustration and alcohol. Those two do not mix; some people tend to become so depressed with their lives that they resort to drinking, which in turn fuels the anger the person experiences. The father exhibited destructive behavior as a result of his anger, which would result in the family's possessions being destroyed. In other words, the father's anger and frustration was one of the main reasons why the family was struggling even more than necessary in terms of expenses.

I disagree. I honestly think the dad could have pulled his family out of poverty by investing in some tupperware (obviously the inexpensive kind found at Wal-Mart and not the trademark version). Another thing the dad could have done is pumped gas when he was getting paid to pump gas at the gas station. If the dad had just done these two simple things he could have reinvented himself as a high class businessman. Instead, his dish-breaking attitude pushed his son into the drug dealing lifestyle and he had to live with the consequences which probably included forcing the remaining members of his family to eat straight out of a big sauce pan.

I agree with astrix. It's difficult to understand what the father guy had against pumping gas, if he had seen The Jerk he would know that pumping gas can be a stepping stone to becoming a successful inventor. Instead he just wanted to hang around on the curb and smoke Noopies and drink his face off. The mother guy was the only one who wanted to work, I don't see why the father guy found it necessary to thrash her for having a good attitude. The kid guy could have gotten a paper route or at least sold candy bars on the street for his "football team", a popular form of employment for Brooklyn's more motivated youths.
