Why was the son-in-law being so rude??

I don't get one part of this movie. When the Story Lady goes to live with her daughter and son in law, the son in law is very rude and doesn't eat hardly any of the food that she'd taken a long time to prepare. If that was my mother in law, I'd be gulping the food down.

I think it's because they were watching their diet.

I think it was designed to reflect the fact that everyone, save for Tandy's character, is way too careful and fearful of life.

Yeah....Well.....that part always angered me. She spent all day making that wonderful and delicious food. The son-in-law was being very rude.

Grace (Jessica Tandy) took it upon herself to cook their meal without checking whether anyone was on a special diet. She cooked like it was 1950. Norm (Richard Masur) wasn’t being rude, he was just trying to watch his cholesterol, possibly under a doctor’s instructions.

Grace was just as out-of-date in a modern family’s kitchen as she was in a schoolroom, or a library. Before she could feel useful, Grace had to find somewhere that her abilities were appreciated. A kitchen wasn’t the place.

I agree completely! My father died in his mid-40s due to cholesterol problems. The family was being very careful with their diet.

It reminded me of my "middle" aunt, who insists on cooking as in the old days though nearly everyone has medical problems, including her. She has to make multi-egg country noodles and uses lard to make huge pies. When we visit, we try to be careful, but our bodies aren't used to it, and we end up very ill.

She intended the best, but her cooking isn't suited to a healthful diet. Also, remember that her daughter noted the correct portions. Her husband followed her lead. "Chowing down" would have been detrimental to them.

She had many other gifts obviously.
