Why did she steal and purposely get caught?

I'm confused as to why the Story Lady decided to steal near the end and purposely get caught. Was there a reason for this? I'm confused.

I think she did it so they wouldn't want her on their television network and she could get out of the hyped up version and go back to her public access tv show that everybody liked.

Don't bother sweating over your bills, in the end we all wind up in the hole!

I guess that was her only way to get out of the contact now that I think about it.

I don't know why you should be confused. It was made very clear in the movie.

When the agency ordered The Story Lady to have changes made to the appearance of her teeth, that was the last straw and she wanted out of her contract. Her son-in-law scrutinized the contract and found the only way out in the following clause:

"Should the undersigned be involved in any crime, immoral act, or engage in any activity deemed unsuitable to the image of Granny Goodheart, blah blah blah blah blah, this contract shall henceforth be declared null and void."
