Why was this so unpopular? What made it so unprofitable?

could he have made it big in the 90's as an action movie star? why didn't the film go anywhere?

I think you are referring to Brian Bosworth. I did some checking and read that it gross over $9 million, and I remember reading the budget was about $24 million. Personally, I liked the movie and many others as evident by the plenty of posts.

At the time of it's release I had no interest in seeing it but upon revisiting it after years it is a decent slightly above average cheeseball early 90's action flick. What's most fun about it is that all the action scenes are practical done in camera so alot of it feels very raw and real. Action films nowadays are too pussy to be as hard as this film was and Lance Henrekson is still the perfect villain. I can now say 20 something years later I actually like this movie.

i wish more people had given it a chance when it was out

i was all over it, and still think it is one of the best examples of the genre; speaking for the late 80s early 90s style, that is

i am making a list BTW for anyone interested, of some of my particularly Ass kicking titles i have enjoyed over the years. check it out if you wish....

that sounds great.

does anyone know why bosworth didn't attract a big audience? i mean he was all over the news in 86-87 when he was in college. was his fame and appeal over with by the time this movie came out?

reply

dude i have wondered about that myself. i do not know why the turnout wasn't bigger. i thought it woulda been way bigger. i myself saw it in the theater in 91, and i loved it right away. part of the problem could be the release date; they claim february and august are slow times. i can't remember when this one came out, but maybe that was part of it. (EDIT-- released may 17 1991... so that was prime time for a summer film. that eliminates the schedule as a factor)

but it was not but a couple of years after he left seattle so it seems like he still woulda had popularity. at least recognition.

maybe it was the way the film was marketed? hmmmm

i am not sure. very curious though.

i hope someone else can add some comments here, shed some light

i'm not sure. it may have just been released too long after his fame had died down. would have been interesting if they had made this in between his college and pro career. the numbers would have been different i think.

anyone know if boz will be making any more movies?

Simple, the dude can not act!!

Yes many of us here thought it was a decent B grade actioner with lots of violence etc etc

But it wasn't a true high level action blockbuster

why didn't the film go anywhere?

When the movie came out, I think I was the target age group as a college student. At the time I was more interested in the Terminator, Die Hard, Predator and Lethal Weapon movies, which were the main competition. Other popular action movies include Last Boy Scout, Backdraft and Total Recall. Basically Stone Cold got overshadowed by way better movies.

Now that over 20 years have passed, I'm ready to watch it. Sons of Anarchy gets part of the credit since they introduced the outlaw motorcycle gang culture to a lot of outsiders. Stone Cold in 1991 may as well have been a foreign film for all I knew about it back then. After watching 6 SOA seasons, I feel like I understand what's going on. Some of the characters from the TV show seem to be in the movie too.

Plus now I can get a kick out of the hair styles, clothes and music. I thought the Blues and hard rock were more popular with biker gangs around 1991. But what do I know.

No two persons ever watch the same movie.

I'm baffled as to why it wasn't a bigger hit. Bosworth should've been a big 90's action star. He had the looks, size, presence and the charisma to pull it off. I mean even at his worst, he's still as believable as Van Damme and I like Van Damme. Maybe it was about timing or just a genre that was too crowded at the time with big names. Ironic because nowadays we're starving for legit movie action heroes, but back then the scene was so crowded with the legends from the 70's & 80's (Stallone, Arnold, Chuck, Mel, Kurt Russell, Harrison Ford), newer blood who hit big in the late 80's and early 90's (Bruce Willis, Van Damme, Seagal, Snipes, Patrick Swayze) and guys who almost broke through, didn't quite, but still made some very enjoyable action movies (Dolph, Carl Weathers, Jeff Speakman). Even Hulk Hogan made a pretty kick ass action flick with 89's 'No Holds Barred', so the action movie frat was jammed. Still Boz has pretty good charisma in this very entertaining watch and should've been given the green light for another actioner.
