I beg your pardon.

This always irked me during the dinner scene. With klingons who didnt even know what to do with a napkin, Chang says "I beg your pardon"
Would a klingon talk like that or just say what.

reply

Just because they didn't know how to use a human table setting it didn't mean they were necessarily uncouth. The Klingons were an honourable race and while their table manners may have left a lot to be desired I always found them often respectfully well spoken to authority figures in Star Fleet.

Hey! You're not old enough to drink! Now go and die for your country!!!

If you've seen episodes of Next Generation, you would see how Klingons eat. No utensils, napkins, and certainly none of what we consider table manners.

Chang is not a unique Klingon. Gorkon is. But Chang is his Cheif of Staff, and expects Chang to follow how he is because he's an ambassador and a diplomat. But you can see that he obviously has a problem with it. He is sarcastic when it comes to manners and etiquette, and when he is shaking your hand, he really wants to smash your face into a bloody pulp. But he has an illusion to maintain in order for his plans to succeed.
Since he is required to have a sense of congeniality, Gorkon WOULD expect him to speak in a courteous manner. He's obviously genuinely shocked by the Hitler reference, and insulted.. despite his secret intentions, but given his job, responsibilities, and etiquette, it is not surprising that he would say "I beg your pardon " .

Of course.. A typical Klingon would not care bout the Hitler reference, but if you truly insulted their honor, they would not retort with words. You would be dead.

I never lie. I willfully participate in a campaign of misinformation.

I also like to imagine that Gorkon had been in power, rising in power, for a long time, and that with Gorkon a new Klingon was emerging, a higher class of "civilized" Klingon. I like to think that Gorkon wasn't just changing the politics of Klingons, but would have been the "Surak" of the Klingon race.

that dinner scene also includes the most memorable quote of the movie: "one of the advantages of being 1000 lightyears from federation headquarters", shatner can't keep a straight face delivering it. without knowing much if hardly anything about this franchise i tuned into it since tcm shut down in my country i take any chance i get to watch what i thought was an older movie, tnt has been airing these star trek movies one after another, this franchise shares several actors with the twilight zone series, i thought there were great looking special effects for an old tv production, i was so surprised to see here it was made in 1991, considering the cast and period of the original series, as well as surprised it being released in theatres.
