Most cringe worthy Martin moment?

For me, it's the way he drinks from the water fountain. I know that's weird, given how creepy he is throughout the movie, but I have to look away on this scene.

reply

I totally agree! I was going to post about this. Has the actor never drunk out of a water fountain before or something? Every person I've ever seen drinking from one purses their lips and sucks the water in. Martin seemed to be catching the water instead, using his mouth like a bucket. But the movement was too rhythmic, it really grossed me out!

reply

@HiMyNameIsPenny....your comment cracked me up!!! There part about using his mouth like a bucket, I lost it. Lmfao!!!!!!!!!

reply

That creeped me out a bit too.

But I wonder if this wasn't deliberate by the actor. Because most scenes are shown for a reason, even if only for character development.

In this case, we know Martin is a predator...a voracious one...of everything he wants....so maybe his equally voracious water drinking was just another example of this.

Good point, they really focused on this scene. It had to be deliberate on his part. No one drinks like that.

reply

probably had a high salt diet too which would make someone very thirsty. 😨

LAURAA!! LAURAAA!! LAURAAAAAA!!

That part was pretty cringeworthy!

reply

Yes ^^^ His screaming for her was annoying

reply

When he's about to suffocate Laura's mom with the pillow.

I thought it was Martin on the exercise machine- it just disgusted me. I felt so sorry for Laura having to be with him all of the time; cook for him, do his OCD cleaning chores, wear what he wants, sleep with him...Yuck.

reply

On the exercise machine he always reminds me of Hitler, with this obsession in his eyes.

reply

Martin makes my stomach turn. He's so creepy and disgusting. I could go on all night about what creeps me out about him. But I'll just stick with 2 for the time being.

The first time he hits her in the beach house and he starts petting her saying "now you'll pout and spoil our supper....smell the bread, just smell the bread". Really? Smell the bread?

And the other is how when he beats her, he calls it a "quarrel". He says it several times and I cringe every time.

reply

Scary as Martin is, a lot of phrases he used are standard *fodder* for abusive men.

By using the word 'quarrel', not only is he avoiding the fact that he beat her up, but is saying she was at least partly responsible for him doing so.

He also treats Laura like she's his daughter, not a wife. Or worse, like she's an animal he just chose to hit & is now petting.

In a film trailer I saw, Martin is shown soaking wet after the boat incident. He looks up, blank-faced, and says "She was the only thing I ever loved."

Martin never viewed Laura as a person, not really, just property.

reply

You're right. Because he says "I'm sorry WE quarreled". There was no "we" in that argument. All she says was that she didn't know the doctor. It was just an excuse to hit her. Because Martin doesn't seem like the type of man that would think his wife was seeing the doctor and then go on a midnight cruise with that very same man.

I agree 100%! I thought similarly when I first saw this film. If Martin really felt she was flirting with the doctor or even worse, trying to cheat with him...why would he have anything at all to do with him afterwards?!

Laura assessed him perfectly when she called Martin a monster. He got off on abusing & controlling her.

reply

Right, abusive men tend to belittle things and call them a quarrel instead of a fight.

reply

When he's exercising on that stair/ladder thing early on before we see evidence of the abuse. I dunno why but it looks so stupid and then it zeroes on his face with that expression and him doing the breathing and it just immediately signaled to me something was F'd/goofy about the guy lol.

reply

The "quarrel" scene was extremely cringe worthy. I also find the sex scene cringe worthy too. Just look at Laura's body language. He's either delusion and thinks that she's enjoying the sex or just really doesn't care that she's incredibly uncomfortable and scared of him.

reply

Martin doesn't care one whit if Laura is enjoying anything.
He's all about control, its the abuse & control that gets him off.

Martin is keeping her there against her will.

Yes...it was gross...it looked like was French kissing the water. ?

reply

I think they had him do it on purpose to make him even more hated.
