significance of lamb?

I listened to her story but didn't get why the lamb plays important part in title?

She is driven to save things/people as an FBI agent because she let that lamb down in her youth, and inadvertently caused it to be slaughtered.

She still hears the lambs screaming in her sleep, and hopes to make them stop thru performing chivalrous deeds.

The book ends with something about Clarice finally sleeping deeply, at last at peace. (ie, she has saved Catherine)

An interesting thing is that Clarice would not have connected this problem/remedy on her own. As a psychiatrist, Dr. Lechter comes to make her see this through their talks.
