The same question with several different scenarios is on the last post of this message board.

Dr. Idiot left it, carelessly, on his cot in his cell when he made him sign some papers.
Cleverly, Hannibal didn't say, "Yo -- you left your pen." Instead, he secreted it and kept it for when he knew it would come in handy.

Sometimes, everything can't be spelled out, or shown on camera.

"After this he'll be a perfectly normal human being, and you know what stinkers they are!"

I thought it was particularly genius of Lector to throw the doctor off guard by distracting him with another request for a transfer to divert his attention off the pen, and get him out of his cell. One would assume that the security guards who freed Lector from his restraint would have been too busy and cognitively engaged (to avoid being eaten) to have noticed the pen sitting inconspicuously to the side.

This scene always kind of bothered me.

I could see the Doctor being excited at the prospect of fame after Hannibal seems willing to help find Buffalo Bill, but how did Barney not notice the pen?

It was laying right in the middle of Hannibal's bed, in the open.

jacc1515,

Refer to above comments. Without watching it again, I'd say that the doctor was so consumed with other information, that he was distracted enough not to notice the pen. Quite genius of Hannibal to throw the doctor a curve-ball question to distract him enough to chauffeur the pen somewhere else.

I think you missed the point of my post.

My point is how did Barney not notice the pen? It was right in the middle of Lecter's bed and Chilton instructed Barney to get Lector ready to go. He would have noticed it and taken it before releasing Lector out of his restraints.
